Raksha Bandhan 2026: 7 Powerful Remedies Sisters Should Do for Their Brothers’ Protection

Want to protect your brother on Raksha Bandhan 2026? Explore 7 traditional remedies sisters can perform for his health, safety, prosperity and wellbeing.

Tiny threads, great blessings – the essence of Raksha Bandhan is not only about tying a rakhi, but also praying for one’s brother’s well-being, success and safety. For this year's Raksha Bandhan 2026, there are various ritualistic ways of adding spirituality to the celebration of the festival.

When Is Raksha Bandhan 2026?

The day of Raksha Bandhan falls on August 28, 2026. The Tithi of Purnima starts from 9:08 AM on August 27 till 9:48 AM on August 28. The timing for tying rakhi in New Delhi is from 5:57 AM to 9:48 AM on August 28; Bhadra ends before sunrise. Exact timings can vary slightly by location, so checking the local Panchang is advisable.

An important point this year is that the partial lunar eclipse on August 28 will not be visible from India, according to current reports, so eclipse-related Sutak restrictions are not generally applicable for rituals in India.

1. Make the Brother Sit Facing East or North

Before beginning the ritual of Raksha Bandhan, the brother should face east or north direction. The directions of east and north in the concept of traditional Vastu are known as auspicious for the presence of good energy.

For preparing the ceremony of Raksha Bandhan, one may have a clean puja thali, diya, roli, rice and sweets.

2. Tie the Rakhi on the Right Wrist

A commonly followed tradition is to tie the rakhi on the brother’s right wrist. Before tying it, the sister can apply a small tilak of roli and sandalwood, perform aarti and offer sweets.

The rakhi symbolizes the holy connection of protection and love. The thread is not to be seen in magical terms, according to Sanatangyan, but rather as a reminder of prayers and the responsibility of family care.

3. Chant the Sacred Raksha Mantra

The reciting of the traditional Raksha Sutra mantra while tying the rakhi is one of the significant aspects of this custom:

येन बद्धो बली राजा दानवेन्द्रो महाबलः।

तेन त्वाम् प्रतिबध्नामि रक्षे मा चल मा चल॥

“With the sacred bond by which the mighty King Bali was bound, this protective thread is tied. O Raksha, remain firm and never waver.”

The chant adds an element of spirituality to the ritual of simply tying the thread.

4. Use Phitkari as a Traditional Nazar Remedy

Phitkari, or alum, is associated in popular folk practices with removing negative energy and nazar. As a traditional remedy, a small piece of phitkari may be kept near the brother briefly during the ceremony and later disposed of respectfully.

However, this should be understood as a folk belief rather than a scientifically proven method of removing negative energy. The strongest protection remains good health practices, loving family support and sincere prayer.

5. Pray to Lord Hanuman for Strength

For a brother facing difficulties, fear or prolonged challenges, a simple prayer to Lord Hanuman can be included in the Raksha Bandhan puja.

A sister can offer a red sweet such as boondi ladoo or simply offer flowers and recite “Om Hanumate Namah” with devotion. Lord Hanuman is traditionally associated with courage, strength and protection.

The Bhagavad Gita beautifully highlights the importance of steadfastness:

योगस्थः कुरु कर्माणि सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा धनञ्जय।

“Established in yoga, perform your duty, abandoning attachment.”

This spirit of courage and duty makes Hanuman worship especially meaningful on a festival centred on protection.

6. Donate for the Brother’s Health and Prosperity

Charity is another simple way to turn Raksha Bandhan prayers into an act of compassion. Food items like rice, milk, or any white food item can be donated during this festival for the wellness and longevity of the family members.

The objective is not to gain wealth individually, but rather to distribute blessings among the needy. Daan is given high importance by Sanatan Dharma, and thus it becomes an integral part of the festival celebration.

7. Pray for Sibling Harmony and Remove Resentment

The festival also provides an opportunity to mend any rifts caused by misunderstanding. In case there have been conflicts that have caused a rift between the siblings, both should pray to Lord Hanuman and promise to talk to each other with patience.

A simple shared prayer, a meal together or an act of charity can become more meaningful than an elaborate ritual. The real “protection” represented by the rakhi also includes protecting the sibling relationship from anger, ego and resentment.

Raksha Bandhan 2026 is a beautiful opportunity to pray for a brother’s health, happiness and protection. These simple traditional remedies, along with sincere love and family harmony, can make the festival more spiritually meaningful.
