Why Is Nirjala Ekadashi Considered Equal to All 24 Ekadashis?
The word “Nirjala” means “without water.” According to traditional Hindu beliefs, this fast is so powerful that observing it once can provide the spiritual benefits of all 24 Ekadashis observed during the year.
As mentioned in traditional Vaishnava teachings:
“एकादश्यां निराहारो यो भवेत् केशवप्रियः।”
One who observes Ekadashi with sincerity and self-discipline becomes dear to Lord Keshava (Vishnu).
According to spiritual traditions, many devotees may find it difficult to observe every Ekadashi throughout the year. With Nirjala Ekadashi, devotees can receive all the rewards of performing all of the Ekadashi fasts combined, just by observing one day of complete devotion and restriction.
Due to this, spiritual seekers and devotees look forward each year to this auspicious day. Many people look for more details about this Ekadashi through our website (and other resources) because of its unique significance and many rewards.

The Story Behind Nirjala Ekadashi
Nirjala Ekadashi is also called Bhimseni Ekadashi; according to the Mahabharata, Bhima found it hard to perform two fastings in one month, but wanted to perform the merit from all fasting days.
Bhima requested help from sage Vyasa in order to obtain the advantages of every Ekadashi. Vyasa instructed him to fast strictly, for one day a year on Nirjala Ekadashi, without consuming anything (neither food nor water). When Bhima carried out this instruction, he obtained the same blessings from his one-day fast that he would have gotten if he had fasted completely during all 24 Ekadashis.
Nirjala Ekadashi has thus become one of the most powerful vrat (fasting) observances in Hinduism for devotees.

Spiritual Benefits of Nirjala Ekadashi Fast
Nirjala Ekadashi is regarded by devotees as being an extremely spiritually uplifting experience.
Some of the key benefits include:
Cleansing of past sins through sincere devotion.
Strengthening faith and self-discipline.
Receiving the blessings of Lord Vishnu.
Accumulating the merit of all 24 Ekadashis.
Promoting spiritual growth and inner peace.
Helping devotees move closer toward liberation (moksha).
A verse from Srimad Bhagavad Gita that expounds on bhakti is as follows:
“पत्रं पुष्पं फलं तोयं यो मे भक्त्या प्रयच्छति।” (Bhagavad Gita 9.26)
Lord Krishna says that He lovingly accepts even a leaf, flower, fruit, or water offered with true devotion.
This verse indicates that the quality of the observance (i.e., sincerity and devotion) is more important than the quantity of material things that are offered.

Rules to Follow During Nirjala Ekadashi
A proper observance of the fast is essential in order to achieve maximum spiritual gain from it.
