Devshayani Ekadashi 2026: Significance of the Sacred Day
Devshayani Ekadashi or Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi is one of the most important Ekadashis of Hinduism. This is because the auspicious period of Chaturmas starts from this day. It is believed that during Chaturmas, Lord Vishnu rests in Yoga Nidra, sleeping on the coils of the divine serpent Ananta Shesha in the Kshira Sagara (Ocean of Milk).
As Lord Vishnu sleeps through the period of Chaturmas, any auspicious ceremonies including marriage, Griha Pravesh etc. are put off until Prabodhini Ekadashi when Lord Vishnu awakes.
The Padma Purana states the importance of Ekadashi as follows:
एकादश्यां निराहारो यो भुङ्क्ते द्वादशी दिने।
विष्णुलोकमवाप्नोति सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते॥
