What Is Devshayani Ekadashi?

Devshayani Ekadashi is alternatively known as Ashadhi Ekadashi, Hari Shayani Ekadashi, and Padma Ekadashi. This Ekadashi takes place on the Shukla Paksha of Ashadha month.

According to Hinduism, Lord Vishnu takes rest by going into a deep yogic sleep on this very day. He does so after lying on Ananta Shesha in Kshira Sagar (ocean of milk). He stays asleep for four months until he wakes up on the next Ekadashi – Prabodhini Ekadashi.

This divine period is meant for spiritual activities, dedication, self-reflection, compassion, and religious rituals.

One such popular verse extols the supremacy of Lord Vishnu:

शान्ताकारं भुजगशयनं पद्मनाभं सुरेशम्।

विश्वाधारं गगनसदृशं मेघवर्णं शुभाङ्गम्॥

Lord Vishnu is the embodiment of peace, reclining upon the cosmic serpent, sustaining the entire universe with divine grace.
