Why Is Putrada Ekadashi Considered Sacred?

The word Putrada broadly means “giver of children.” Traditionally, this Ekadashi is associated with couples praying for the blessing of a child, while also seeking health, prosperity and happiness for children already in the family.

However, its spiritual meaning goes beyond the desire for a son. The observance is connected with devotion, family welfare, repentance and divine grace. The Padma Purana describes the Shravana Shukla Ekadashi as Putrada and a vrata associated with the fulfilment of wishes:

श्रावणे शुक्लपक्षे तु पुत्रदा नाम विश्रुता ।

एकादशी वाञ्छितदा कुरुध्वं तद्व्रतं जनाः ॥

“The Ekadashi of the bright fortnight of Shravana is renowned as Putrada. People should observe this vrata, which is associated with the fulfilment of cherished wishes.”

For readers exploring Sanatan traditions, sanatangyan offers a deeper spiritual perspective: the day is not merely about asking for a particular outcome, but about surrendering hopes before Lord Vishnu with faith and discipline.

The Story of King Mahijit and Putrada Ekadashi

The traditional story of Putrada Ekadashi is associated with King Mahijit of Mahishmati and Sage Lomasha. The king was prosperous and respected but remained deeply troubled because he had no child.

When the king's subjects sought a solution, Sage Lomasha revealed through his spiritual insight that an act from the king's previous life had created a karmic obstacle. In that birth, he had been a merchant who, while extremely thirsty, pushed away a cow and her calf so that he could drink from a pond.

The sage advised the king and his people to observe Shravana Putrada Ekadashi, worship Lord Vishnu and dedicate the merit of the vrata toward the king's wish. According to the traditional account, the observance removed the obstacle, and the queen eventually gave birth to a virtuous son.

The story carries an important lesson: devotion is accompanied by compassion, repentance and righteous conduct. A sincere prayer is traditionally seen not merely as a request, but also as an opportunity for inner transformation.

Which Mantras Can Be Chanted?

This Ekadashi is devoted to Lord Vishnu and Lord Krishna. You can meditate with the help of mantras to Vishnu and keeping your mind peaceful and concentrated.

Popular Santana Gopala Mantra is:

ॐ श्रीं ह्रीं क्लीं ग्लौं देवकीसुत गोविन्द वासुदेव जगत्पते।

देहि मे तनयं कृष्ण त्वामहं शरणं गतः॥

O Krishna, son of Devaki, Govinda and Lord Vasudeva, Lord of the universe, refuge is sought in You. Bless the devotee with a child.

Other simple mantras include:

ॐ क्लीं कृष्णाय नमः।

Salutations to Lord Krishna.

ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय।

Salutations to Lord Vasudeva, Lord Vishnu.

The Santana Gopala Mantra may traditionally be repeated using a Tulsi mala, according to individual faith and practice. There is no need to treat a specific number of repetitions as a guarantee of conception; the emphasis remains on sincere devotion and spiritual discipline.
