Raksha Bandhan 2026: Right or Left Hand? Know the Correct Way to Tie Rakhi

Should Rakhi be tied on the right or left hand? Know the Hindu tradition, correct Rakhi ceremony, and auspicious timing for Raksha Bandhan 2026.

Raksha Bandhan means more than a festival full of presents, beautiful threads and decorations; this is a holy celebration of love, shelter and everlasting ties of brotherhood. But a common question arises every year: Should Rakhi be tied on the right hand or the left hand? Know the traditional belief, the correct Raksha Bandhan 2026 muhurat, the significance of the Rakshasutra and the simple ritual behind this beautiful festival.

When Is Raksha Bandhan 2026?

Raksha Bandhan 2026 will be celebrated on Friday, August 28, on the occasion of Shravan Purnima. The Panchang says that Purnima Tithi started at 9:08 am on August 27 and will finish at 9:48 am on August 28, 2026.

The time of observing Raksha Bandhan is crucial because according to Hindu beliefs, one should avoid the Bhadra period for the performance of any auspicious rituals related to the occasion. In 2026, the period of Bhadra will end before the rising of the sun, making it an ideal time for the ritual. According to the Panchang calculation for Delhi and many other regions, the muhurat for tying Rakhi is from 05:57 AM to 09:48 AM.

As time calculations might vary as per the location, the family needs to refer to their regional Panchang for the accurate muhurat.

Right or Left Hand: Where Should Rakhi Be Tied?

The traditional answer is the right wrist of the brother.

In Hindu beliefs, right side is associated with things that have to do with goodness and religious ceremonies. Thus, when a sister ties Rakhi onto brother’s wrist, it is common to do it using the right hand. This sacred thread symbolizes her wish for long life, happiness, health and security of her brother.

The practice of tying Rakshasutra is also associated with the idea of divine protection. According to Hindus, Vishnu is the one who gives this sacred thread or Rakshasutra.

It is a crucial distinction to note that there might be minor differences in customs between a Rakhi tied during the occasion of Raksha Bandhan and a Kalava or Rakshasutra used in any other rituals.

Why Is the Right Hand Considered Auspicious?

In most Hindu rituals, the right hand is mainly used for performing rituals, offering or blessing or carrying out other auspicious acts. The practice of tying a Raksha Sutra on the right wrist is therefore connected with the idea of auspiciousness and protection.

While tying the sacred thread, a traditional Raksha Sutra mantra may also be recited:

“येन बद्धो बली राजा दानवेन्द्रो महाबलः।

तेन त्वामनुबध्नामि रक्षे मा चल मा चल॥”

“With the sacred thread with which the mighty King Bali was bound, the same thread is tied to you. O Raksha Sutra, remain firm and protect.”

The mantra expresses the central spirit of the festival: protection, strength and an unbreakable bond.

What Is the Correct Way to Tie Rakhi?

The Raksha Bandhan ceremony can be performed with simple traditional steps:

  • Prepare a puja thali with rakhi, roli or kumkum, rice, diya and sweets.

  • The sister applies a tilak on the brother's forehead.

  • Perform his Aarti with devotion.

  • Tie the rakhi securely around the right wrist.

  • Recite a Raksha Sutra mantra while tying the thread.

  • Offer sweets after the ceremony.

  • The brother gives a gift and expresses a heartfelt promise of love and support.

The ceremony does not need to be elaborate. The sincerity behind the ritual remains its most meaningful part.

Why Is Raksha Bandhan Called a Bond of Protection?

Raksha Bandhan literally refers to a bond of protection. The festival celebrates the emotional connection between siblings, but its spiritual symbolism goes beyond a brother protecting a sister.

One famous tradition connects the festival with Krishna and Draupadi. According to popular tradition, Draupadi wrapped a piece of cloth around Krishna’s injured finger. Krishna is then said to have remembered her gesture and protected her when she needed him. The story beautifully expresses the idea that genuine affection creates a bond of mutual care.

A popular legend talks about Rakhi and its link to Yama and Yamuna. Yama was welcomed with warmth by his sister Yamuna and hence the legend came to be associated with the blessings of sibling love.

Celebrations of Raksha Bandhan 2026 – Love, Protection and Sibling Bonding. Traditionally, the Rakhi should be tied on the right wrist of the brother during the auspicious time of the day. In the end, it’s the love and blessings that matter when it comes to tying a rakhi.
