Sawan Shivratri 2026 would take place on Tuesday, August 11 and devotees would be offering Kanwar jal to Lord Shiva. They would also keep vrat and offer night long prayers to the god. But Bhadra Kaal on the same day makes it necessary for devotees to consider timing for Jalabhishek as well. When Is Sawan Shivratri 2026?
As per the Drik Panchang, Sawan Shivratri would fall on August 11, 2026, on the Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi. Chaturdashi tithi would start on August 11 at 4:54 AM and end on August 12 at 1:52 AM.
Sawan Shivrati is considered to be important because the whole Shravan month is meant for worshipping lord Shiva. Devotees observe fasts, offer jal and Belpatra to Shivling, recite Shiva mantras and stay up late at night worshipping lord shiva.

Kanwar Yatra 2026 Ends on August 11
The Kanwar Yatra 2026 starts on July 30 and ends on August 11, and both dates fall on the occasion of Sawan Shivratri. This last date holds particular significance since Kanwariyas usually present Ganga jal collected during their yatra journey to Lord Shiva.
This is because the Kanwar symbolizes devotion, perseverance, and dedication. After collecting the holy Ganga water, devotees take it with great reverence to the temple of Lord Shiva for Jalabhishek.
Therefore, this means that August 11 is not only the occasion of Sawan Shivratri but also the important Kanwar Jalabhishek day for the devotees.
Bhadra Kaal on Sawan Shivratri: Can Kanwar Jal Be Offered?
Yes, the Bhadra may have its presence, but it should not affect Shiva worship. Nevertheless, devotees who perform their puja according to Muhurat usually refrain from presenting their Kanwar jal if Bhadra is active and find a favorable time.
The Vishti Karana or Bhadra in New Delhi according to Panchang, is from around 4:56 AM to 3:24 PM on August 11.
Therefore, devotees should follow the local Panchang when deciding the precise time for Jalabhishek.
The important point is simple: Bhadra Kaal should not create fear or confusion. Shiva Puja can be planned around the appropriate Muhurat.
Auspicious Muhurats for Jalabhishek
The key daytime Muhurats for August 11 include:
Brahma Muhurat: 5:23 AM–6:00 AM
Abhijit Muhurat: 12:06 PM–12:58 PM
Godhuli Muhurat: 9:13 PM–9:32 PM
Because Bhadra overlaps much of the daytime, devotees who specifically wish to avoid Bhadra may prefer an appropriate evening or night worship period, according to the local Panchang.
The most important Shiva worship period, however, is Nishita Kaal.
Nishita Kaal: The Most Sacred Time for Shiva Puja
For New Delhi-based Panchang calculations, Nishita Kaal Puja is from 12:05 AM to 12:48 AM on August 12. Although the clock has crossed midnight, this is part of the sacred Shivratri night beginning on August 11.
This midnight period is traditionally considered highly auspicious for Shiva worship. Devotees can perform Jalabhishek, offer Belpatra, light a diya and chant “ॐ नमः शिवाय” with devotion.
The Bhagavad Gita beautifully explains the importance of sincere offering:
“पत्रं पुष्पं फलं तोयं यो मे भक्त्या प्रयच्छति।”
Whoever offers a leaf, flower, fruit or water with devotion, that offering is accepted by the Divine.

First Prahar: 7:04 PM–9:45 PM
Second Prahar: 9:45 PM–12:26 AM
Third Prahar: 12:26 AM–3:07 AM
Fourth Prahar: 3:07 AM–5:48 AM
Drik Panchang also notes that devotees traditionally perform Shiva Puja during the night and observe the fast with Parana at the appropriate time after the night worship.
What Should Devotees Do?
In Sawan Shivratri, devotees can have a sacred bath, observe the selected vrat, maintain cleanliness while doing worship and also do Jalabhishek using Gangajal or any clean water. Belpatra, flowers, fruits and Shiva mantras can be used depending on the family traditions.
The persons who carry Kanwar jal must obey the pilgrimage norms and offer the water to the prescribed Shiva temple at an appropriate time period.
Sanatangyan suggests the devotees to concentrate more on श्रद्धा, संयम and भक्ति rather than on the fears which surround Bhadra Kaal. As long as the rituals are done with faith and as per the local Panchang, Sawan Shivratri becomes a very meaningful Shiva worship night of the year for the devotees.
