The beginning of Valentine’s Week is celebrated on Rose Day. Rose Day is typically celebrated as the day of love, friendship, and admiration. However, when examined from a sanatan perspective, offering a rose represents much more than the romantic surface appeal we find today; in this case, it represents the bhavna associated with roses (pure intention).

In spirituality as per Indian thought, an emotion or feeling is not just experienced; it is also offered. Therefore, when one gives a rose with pure intention (bhavna) to someone else; it is equivalent to using a flower to express love and respect for that person. Sadhus often teach that a single flower offered with bhavna carries as much spiritual weight as any offering made during puja, etc.

The History of Rose Day and the Symbolism of Flowers

History shows that gifting roses as a symbol of emotion is not a new phenomenon. Since antiquity, 'Roses' have represented beauty and love through the arts, literature, and folklore; they have been associated with deep feelings among many cultures throughout time. Throughout the history of Vedic culture, flowers were never just decoration. Ancient Shastras describe flowers to be carriers of subtle energy, conveying emotions and intentions. For this reason, they are used during yajnas, and pujas, as well as other sacred rituals.

There is a Verse written in Sanskrit that resonates with this idea:

“पुष्पं फलम् तोयं यो मे भक्त्या प्रयच्छति।” - (Bhagavad Gita 9.26)

“Whoever offers Me a leaf, a flower, fruit, or water with devotion, I accept it.”

This verse signifies that the emotion associated with the gift is stronger than the gift itself. This truth corresponds perfectly with the essence of Rose Day.
