In a quiet village near Nanjangud in Karnataka stands the Sri Santhana Venugopala Swamy Temple, popularly known as Huchappa Gopala. Believed by devotees to be around 1,800 years old, this sacred Krishna temple has become especially known as a place where couples pray for the blessing of children.
A Temple Surrounded by Faith and Ancient Legends
Situated in Hemmaragala village, Mysuru district, the temple is shrouded in several intriguing legends. According to local tradition, Lord Krishna appeared in a dream to King Gangarasa and revealed the place where his idol was buried.
After returning victorious from battle, the king's chariot wheel reportedly became stuck at the very spot mentioned in the dream. The idol was discovered there and taken to the ashram of Sage Koundinya, who is believed to have installed and worshipped it. Because of this connection, the temple is also regarded as Koundinya Maharshi Kshetra.
The temple was later renovated during the Hoysala period. Historical tradition records a land grant associated with King Veeraballava in 1298 AD for the temple's upkeep.
Why Do Couples Pray Here for a Child?
Santhana Venugopala, itself, is a very meaningful name for the devotees. "Santhana" means offspring whereas Venugopala is a name of Lord Krishna.
Couple desiring children have been visiting this temple for generations now and praying here to get their wishes fulfilled. The New Indian Express reported that childless couples from different parts of the country come to the temple, while silver cradles placed inside are regarded by devotees as symbols of prayers answered.
These traditions should be understood as matters of faith and devotion rather than medical guarantees. Fertility difficulties can have many medical causes, and appropriate medical care remains important. For devotees, however, prayer provides hope, emotional strength and a sense of surrender.
A beautiful verse from the Bhagavad Gita expresses the spirit of such devotion:
पत्रं पुष्पं फलं तोयं यो मे भक्त्या प्रयच्छति।
तदहं भक्त्युपहृतमश्नामि प्रयतात्मनः॥
“Whoever offers Me with devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit or water, that offering of devotion is accepted.”

The Curious Story Behind ‘Huchappa Gopala’
The deity has another unusual name—Huchappa Gopala, with "Huchu" commonly understood in the local tradition as “mad.”
One popular legend tells of a Chola king who desperately wanted a son. After praying at the temple, his queen gave birth to a girl. According to the story, the disappointed king was devastated, but the child later miraculously transformed into a boy. The extraordinary event is said to have led devotees to call the deity Huchappa Gopala.
Another explanation connects the name with a local pronunciation of Utsava Gopala. The temple's traditions therefore preserve more than one explanation for this unusual name.

The Sacred Danda and Danda Sparsha
Perhaps the most distinctive feature of the temple is its Danda, a sacred staff traditionally associated with Sage Koundinya.
According to temple tradition, the sage transferred his spiritual power to the Danda before leaving his mortal body. Visitors believe that touching or receiving the holy rod called as "Danda Sparsha" brings blessings in their lives and removes all the hardships from their path.
Danda Sparsha is provided on Saturdays and Sundays and its timings are generally between 6 AM to 6 PM. However, visitors must check locally about the timings since these timings may vary from time to time at this temple
