Why Is Putrada Ekadashi Considered So Important?
Putrada means giver of a son or child. For many years, this Ekadashi was related to the wish for having a child or blessing the family with spiritual prosperity and happiness.
The devotees observe this vrat with full devotion to God. Sincere worshiping of God Vishnu during Putrada Ekadashi gives divine blessings and helps to overcome spiritual difficulties in the life of a person's family.
Observance of the vrat is not limited only by the wish of having children. As any Ekadashi, it is an occasion for the development of self-control, devotion, charity, and mental purity.
In Sanatangyan, one should understand the deep meaning of Putrada Ekadashi beyond material aspirations. The vrat teaches how to have faith, surrender, and lead a disciplined spiritual life.
Spiritual Significance of the Vrat
Putrada Ekadashi is observed with devotion to God Vishnu and goddess Lakshmi. Devotees think that sincere fasting, prayer, giving alms, and remembering of God Vishnu purify the mind.
Here is one of the beautiful verses in Bhagavad Gita describing the significance of the humble offerings of devotion:
पत्रं पुष्पं फलं तोयं यो मे भक्त्या प्रयच्छति।
तदहं भक्त्युपहृतमश्नामि प्रयतात्मनः॥
“Whoever offers Me with devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit or water, that offering of devotion is accepted.”
The above-quoted verse describes the essence that devotion outweighs anything else. Simple offerings with full devotion have greater spiritual significance for the devotee.

Putrada Ekadashi Puja Vidhi
Here is the simple Puja Vidhi that may be followed based on the tradition of one’s family:
Wake up early and take a bath before beginning the day's worship.
Clean the home temple and prepare a clean space for Lord Vishnu.
Take a Sankalp to observe the Ekadashi vrat with devotion.
Place an image or idol of Lord Vishnu and light a diya.
Offer flowers, sandalwood, fruits and Tulsi leaves.
Chant “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” or recite Vishnu Sahasranama.
Spend time listening to or reading stories associated with Lord Vishnu and Ekadashi.
Maintain sattvic conduct and avoid grains, rice, onion, garlic and other foods traditionally avoided during Ekadashi.
Observe a water-only, fruit-based or stricter fast according to health, ability and family tradition.
Perform Vishnu Puja and charity before breaking the fast during the appropriate Parana period.
What Should Be Avoided on Putrada Ekadashi?
Devotees do not take rice, cereals, beans, grains and even onion and garlic in their diets during Ekadashi days. They may go with fruits and milk or any fasting foods according to the permitted foods in fastings. The devotees who follow the Nirjala fasts should consider their own health before adopting such type of fasting.
Prayer, self-restraint, kindness, donation and remembrance of the Lord Vishnu are equally important as fasting in the Ekadashi fast.
To sum up, Putrada Ekadashi 2026 is an auspicious occasion where one may seek the blessings of Lord Vishnu through fasting, prayers and devotion.
