Ghost Month 2026: The Hidden Spiritual Meaning Behind Bag Charms

Why do some people put away bag charms during Ghost Month 2026? Explore the hidden spiritual meaning, traditions and beliefs behind the practice.

Traditional Ghost Month takes place from August 13 to September 10 in 2026, and the date of the Hungry Ghost Festival is around August 27. However, why do some people decide to hide their adorable bag charms during this time? Well, the reason is explained by the ancient legend about the wandering souls, symbols and the need to show respect to the otherworldly creatures.

What Is Ghost Month?

The seventh month of the Chinese lunar calendar is known as Ghost Month. According to the Taoist and Buddhist beliefs, the period is marked by the increased openness of the border between the spiritual world and the world of people, which makes it possible for spirits and the deceased to return to the mortal world.

Instead of being treated as the period of fear, the Ghost Month was traditionally linked to memories, mercy and respect for the dead. Thus, the food offerings, incense and joss paper could be prepared during this time by families in order to honor the ancestors and satisfy the wandering souls.

This spiritual attitude is important because Ghost Month is not simply about fear. It is about remembering that the unseen deserves mindfulness and respect.

Why Are Bag Charms Linked With Ghost Month?

One of the more modern beliefs surrounding Ghost Month concerns bag charms, especially small figurines, dolls, animal-shaped charms and accessories that make noise.

There is an important distinction here: traditional Ghost Month scriptures and established religious texts do not specifically instruct people to remove or hide bag charms. The idea appears to be a contemporary folk superstition rather than a formal religious rule.

The belief suggests that figurine-like objects could potentially be viewed as symbolic “vessels” or focal points for wandering spirits. Because many modern bag charms resemble tiny human or animal figures, some people prefer not to carry them during Ghost Month.

Jingling charms can also attract attention because of their sound. This has led to another folk belief that noisy metal accessories should be avoided during the month.

There is no scientific evidence that bag charms attract spirits. That is why hiding them is considered to be a cultural/spiritual measure, rather than the fact.

Ghost Month Is About Respect, Not Just Fear

Traditional Ghost Month practices emphasize offerings and remembrance. Families may prepare food, fruit, drinks and incense for ancestors or wandering spirits. Joss paper, sometimes called spirit money, is also traditionally burned as an offering.

Water or lotus lanterns are another beautiful part of the tradition. In some customs, lanterns are floated on water as a symbolic way of guiding spirits toward their proper destination.

This spirit of compassion has an interesting parallel in Hindu thought. The Bhagavad Gita teaches that charity should be offered with the right intention:

दातव्यमिति यद्दानं दीयतेऽनुपकारिणे ।

देशे काले च पात्रे च तद्दानं सात्त्विकं स्मृतम् ॥ — Bhagavad Gita 17.20

Charity given with the thought that it is one's duty, at the proper place and time, and to a worthy recipient, without expecting anything in return, is considered sattvic.

Despite being an ode to Ghost Month, this verse brings out the spiritual concept of the meaning that lies in giving, compassion, and good intentions, which surpasses the fear of the unknown.

What Should Be Avoided During Ghost Month?

There are quite a few taboos related to Ghost Month, although they tend to differ from culture to culture.

Swimming late at night is believed to be prohibited since it might result in danger from wandering spirits near water sources. Walking alone in isolated areas at night and being outside until late hours is considered dangerous too for some.

Some may even postpone weddings, move to a new apartment, or commence any important activity during this period, if adhering to traditional customs associated with Ghost Month. All of them are rooted in culture and spirituality and have nothing to do with science.

Thus, this phrase should rather be interpreted as “be cautious and respectful.”

Ghost Month 2026 is essentially an expression of respect, awareness, and remembrance and not fear. Although hiding bag charms is a modern-day superstition, it can be performed on a voluntary basis.
