Nirjala Ekadashi Katha: The Story of Bhima

The origin of the startup of the Nirjala Ekadashi is attributed to Bhima, one of the five Pandava brothers, from the Mahabharata.

As Bhima was a Pandava, he had a very large appetite and found it difficult to maintain any of the standard Ekadashi fasts because his brothers could always finish the fasts before him. Bhima was always concerned that through not being able to participate in the sacred observances he would lose the blessings that he should receive from at least participating in the sacred observances. To find help, he sought the guidance of Sage Vyasa.

Sage Vyasa recommended to Bhima the order to follow the Nirjala Ekadashi fast while participating in it all day without food or water.

Sage Vyasa told Bhima to do a single fast on Nirjala Ekadashi every year, this fast would have no food and no water consumed throughout the day and must be done with the utmost discipline. Although Bhima found the fast to be unbearably hard, he did accomplish this fast through his determination and devotion. Because of Bhima's devotion Lord Vishnu gave him all the spiritual merit from having completed the 24 Ekadashi fasts.

There are many legends that surround the establishment of Nirjala Ekadashi. The most popular is that it was named after Lord Vishnu when Bhima was granted the name of Bhimseni.

Nirjala Ekadashi has long been established as one of the most powerful ekadashi that produces faith, devotion, and self-discipline to Lord Vishnu. If any devotee has the required level of faith and commits to following the advice of saints (Sadhus), he will create a great deal of merit, which will allow him to continue progressing along the spiritual path of Dharma and Moksha.
