24 Ekadashis in One Fast? Discover the Divine Power of Nirjala Ekadashi

24 Ekadashis in one fast? Learn why Nirjala Ekadashi is considered the most powerful Vishnu vrat for blessings, prosperity, and moksha.

Nirjala Ekadashi, the most sacred and potent of the twenty-four Ekadashis each year, will occur on June 25, 2026. This special type of Ekadashi is a "Vrat" where devotees fast without both food and water; it is thought to give one the same merit and blessings as all of the other thirty-five fasts in the year. Here is some information to help you understand the significance, date, rituals, scriptural importance, and divine blessings associated with Nirjala Ekadashi.

What Is Nirjala Ekadashi?

The day of Ekadashi is devoted, in Sanatana Dharma, to Lord Vishnu; it occurs two times per month, according to the lunar calendar. While all types of Ekadashis have great spiritual merit and significance, Ekadashi Nirjala is unique.

Nirjala, meaning "without water," makes this fast one of the most strict forms of Hindu fasting because you cannot consume either food or drink throughout the duration of the vrat (fast). For these reasons it is also called Maha Ekadashi.

Legend has it that if you keep this fast, you will receive the same spiritual benefits as if you had fasted for all twenty-four Ekadashi's throughout the entire year.

Nirjala Ekadashi 2026 Date and Timings

The dates for Nirjala Ekadashi 2026 have been misconstrued. According to the Hindu calendar (Panchang), Nirjala Ekadashi will occur on:

Nirjala Ekadashi Date: Thursday, June 25, 2026

Auspicious Timings

  • Ekadashi Tithi Begins: 06:12 PM on June 24, 2026

Devotees should follow the prescribed Parana timings to complete the vrat properly.

Why Is Nirjala Ekadashi Considered So Powerful?

The observance of Nirjala Ekadashi is considered by many to be the ultimate form of all Ekadashi fasts. This is due to its rigorous discipline and unique spiritually rewarding properties.

According to the majority of ancient scriptures, those who faithfully observe this fast receive rewards which will benefit their four Purusharthas.

  • Dharma (Righteousness)

  • Artha (Prosperity)

  • Kama (Fulfillment of desires)

  • Moksha (Liberation)

A widely held belief is that even if a devotee cannot observe every Ekadashi throughout the year, the devotee may still receive the same merit as someone who observes every Ekadashi by observing Nirjala Ekadashi with sincere devotion.

The Bhagavad Gita affirms this by recognizing the High Spiritual Earlier-Scene in Nirjala Ekadashi.

अनन्याश्चिन्तयन्तो मां ये जनाः पर्युपासते।

तेषां नित्याभियुक्तानां योगक्षेमं वहाम्यहम्॥

Those who worship the Lord with unwavering devotion are protected and blessed by Him.

This verse emphasizes the importance of true love for God (God being idolized) as it relates to Nirjla Ekadashi.

The Story of Bhimseni Ekadashi

Bhimseni Ekadashi refers to the Ekadashi connected with Bhima, one of the five brothers.

As the legend relates, Bhima is said to have the most voracious appetite and had great difficulty in observing the many fasting days which are part of Hindu tradition. To help him manage his adherence to fasting, Bhima approached Maharishi Vyasa for guidance.

Vyasa instructed him to observe one Nirjala Ekadashi completely and with total devotion. Although the fast was most difficult and after 24 hours without eating or drinking, Bhima completed the fast as instructed and thus received the same spiritual credit as a person who has observed all of the Ekadashis.

That story continues to be a strong motivator for the devotee to follow their beliefs with discipline, commitment, and self-control.

Spiritual Benefits of Nirjala Ekadashi

Many devotees believe by observing this vrat, they will benefit both spiritually and materially.

Some commonly mentioned benefits include:

  • Removal of past negative karmas

  • Greater mental discipline and self-control

  • Blessings of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi

  • Happiness, prosperity, and wellbeing

  • Progress on the path of spiritual growth

  • Fulfillment of sincere prayers and wishes

Also, the holy texts remind us that the soul has no beginning or end.

न जायते म्रियते वा कदाचिन्

नायं भूत्वा भविता वा न भूयः॥

The soul is never born and never dies; it is eternal and indestructible.

Through our devotional service, we will develop our spirituality by means of meditation and through observing Nirjala Ekadashi, we can experience God's mercy by attending the ceremonies.

How to Observe Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat

Devotees typically start their day early on the day before the observance of this very strict vrat or vow.

Important Rituals

  • Take a holy bath in the morning.

  • Offer water to Surya Dev.

  • Wear clean yellow clothes.

  • Worship Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi.

  • Offer Tulsi leaves, yellow flowers, and Panchamrit.

  • Chant Vishnu Sahasranama or Vishnu mantras.

  • Spend time in prayer, meditation, and devotional activities.

Many devotees either visit or gather to participate together in bhajan at their local temple on the day of Nirjala Ekadashi.

Charity on Nirjala Ekadashi: A Sacred Duty

When we do charitable deeds during the hot days on the day of Nirjala Ekadashi, the effects of our good deeds are especially beneficial to us.

Auspicious Donations

  • Offer drinking water to the thirsty.

  • Water trees and plants.

  • Arrange water for birds and animals.

  • Donate food to the needy.

  • Give clothing, footwear, and umbrellas to those in need.

The spirit of compassion is beautifully reflected in the teaching:

परोपकाराय पुण्याय पापाय परपीडनम्॥

Helping others leads to virtue, while causing suffering leads to sin.

When someone performs a charitable act on Nirjala Ekadashi, he or she receives the benefit of multiplied karma (spiritual reward) from the act of charity performed that day.

Nirjala Ekadashi is an extraordinary and significant vrat (spiritual vow) that signifies a devotee's devotion to and discipline towards their relationship with Lord Vishnu. If the observance of Nirjala Ekadashi is performed with a sincere heart, one will receive the same spiritual merit as having performed all twenty-four of the Ekadashis thus leading to prosperity, peace and ultimately moksha.
