Kangana Ranaut Visits Chamunda Mata Temple for PM Modi – What's Special About This Shrine?

Kangana Ranaut offered prayers for PM Modi at Chamunda Mata Temple—but what is the fascinating history and spiritual importance of this famous Rajasthan shrine?

On the occasion of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi achieving the milestone of 4,399 consecutive days in office, Actress-Politician Kangana Ranaut worshipped at the revered Shree Chamunda Mata Temple located in Jodhpur for PM Modi's long life, good health and continued leadership. This visit gained renewed attention to one of Rajasthan’s most sacred temples, again adding to the spiritual significance attached to it.

Kangana Ranaut Offers Prayers for PM Modi's Historic Achievement

This well-known temple was revisited by acting/political figure Kangana after PM Modi surpassed the record of India’s First Prime Minister; Jawaharlal Nehru, taking over as PM of India on October 23, 2014, and serving 4,399 consecutive days in a non-emergency.

After prayer and worship Kangana commented to reporters how thankful she was for this achievement of PM Modi and how she prayed for continued good health for him as well as wishing for him to experience the happiness of a long life. She said that prayers were offered to thank the Divine for the historic record created by the Prime Minister and to seek blessings for his future.

Kangana's visit created a great deal of interest about the spiritual importance of the temple she chose for this most special occasion.

Where Is Shree Chamunda Mata Temple Located?

This temple is located on top of Mehrangarh Fort located in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, which is at an altitude of 600 metres (about 1,965 feet) above the “Blue City” below, where it overlooks and can see far into the distant horizon from this most commanding view above the city.

The temple is dedicated to Goddess Chamunda, who represents one of the fiercest Goddesses of Maa Durga, who has been known by those that worship her as the protector of devotees by fighting against all evil forces attempting to destroy them.

Every year, many thousands of people make pilgrimages to this holy place to seek the blessings of the goddess in hopes of receiving blessings such as protection from harm, prosperity, courage, and good fortune for their families.

The Fascinating Legend Behind the Temple

One of the most intriguing aspects of the temple is the legend associated with its foundation.

The local legend says that when Rao Jodha decided to build his fort, he chose Mehrangarh Hill for its location, but at the time a great sage was meditating on this hill. The sage would not get up even when disturbed, which caused Rao Jodha to become angry. Because of his anger, the sage is believed to have placed a curse on the kingdom that would lead to a lack of water.

In desperation, Rao Jodha called upon his priests to find out what he needed to do in order to resolve the curse, and the priests informed him that he should worship Chamunda Mata for blessings of protection. There is another legend that states that Rao Jodha had a dream in which the goddess Chamunda Mata instructed him to build a temple to her on this hill.

The temple is a testament to a timeless principle that exists in Hindu scriptures:

"या देवी सर्वभूतेषु शक्तिरूपेण संस्थिता। नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥"

Salutations again and again to the Divine Goddess who resides in all beings as power and strength.

Devotees of Goddess Chamunda Mata continue to believe that her divine energy protects the city and its residents.

Why Devotees Worship Chamunda Mata

Many worshippers consider Goddess Chamunda to be a fierce protector who destroys negativity and provides protection for those who are her devotees through her divine blessings. Worshippers visit the temple every day seeking blessings regarding their health, economic well-being, and courage to fight evil influences.

Other pilgrims (particularly women) will frequently pray for the well-being and happiness of their families.

The importance of the temple as a source of spiritual energy is a reflection of another important teaching from Hinduism:

"सर्वमङ्गलमाङ्गल्ये शिवे सर्वार्थसाधिके। शरण्ये त्र्यम्बके गौरी नारायणि नमोऽस्तु ते॥"

O Divine Mother, the source of all auspiciousness and fulfillment, salutations to You who grant protection and blessings to all.

Many people believe that Chamunda Mata (the goddess of war, as represented by Hindus) has achieved victory over fear and negativity due to the teachings of 'sanatangyan'.

Navratri Celebrations Draw Massive Crowds

The peaks of all pilgrimages to this temple occur during the Navratri festival when millions of pilgrims visit.

During these nine nights of praying to Durga, many people who come from all over Rajasthan and many states will pray together in one location.

During this time, there is an incredible spiritual energy with the presence of prayers and worship through the use of bhakti (devotion).

A verse in the Bhagavad Gita states that:

"श्रद्धावान् लभते ज्ञानम्।" (भगवद्गीता 4.39)

A person with faith attains wisdom and spiritual understanding.

Thousands of pilgrims come to Chamunda Mata Temple each year, showing their faith.

Remembering the 2008 Temple Tragedy

Chamunda Mata Temple is an expression of faith, but it is also an example of a tragedy that happened a few years ago.

On September 30, 2008, the festival of Navratri was to begin, and over 25,000 pilgrims had gathered at the temple. There was a crushing stampede that occurred that took the lives of 224 people and injured more than 425.

The stampede was started due to a false rumor of a bomb explosion nearby. The government has tightened its policies and procedures regarding crowds and the safety of those in the temple to avoid such an occurrence in the future.

Chamunda Mata Temple is still spiritually meaningful, as Kangana Ranaut's visit to this shrine confirms. Not only does the temple have a long and distinguished history, but it is also associated with many legends about the power of Goddess Chamunda and the spiritual faith and love that millions of Hindus feel for Her.
