Have you heard of the Ekadashi that appears only once every 3 years? Learn why Parama Ekadashi 2026 is considered the Supreme Ekadashi and how devotees observe this sacred fast.
Parama Ekadashi, the most vital and rare fasting celebration in the Hindu calendar, will occur on 25th February, 2026. It is different from every other Ekadashi. This is because it can only be observed in an Adhik Maas (extra lunar month). This extra lunar month will occur about every 3 years, making it a rare fast. Through fasting on Parama Ekadashi, devotees believe they will earn prosperity, increase their spiritual progress, and reach moksha (the final liberation from the cycle of incarnations).

What Makes Parama Ekadashi So Rare?
In the average year of the Hindu calendar, a yearly total of 24 Ekadashis occur. There are 2 Ekadashis (fasting days) in each month. The exception to this pattern is Parama Ekadashi. Parama Ekadashi is the only Ekadashi (fasting day) observed in an extra lunar month (Adhik Maas) added to the annual Hindu calendar (approximately once every 3 years).
Parama Ekadashi falls in the Krishna Paksha (waning moon) Ekadashi of an Adhik Maas as defined by Hindu tradition, making it even more special because of its unique spiritual and cosmic characteristics.
Due to their rarity and special astrological significance, many devotees consider Parama Ekadashi to be the "Supreme Ekadashi" or a sacred time that can give one tremendous karmic merit (spiritual credit) and help them to achieve complete liberation from all worldly ties.

The fast is observed on 11 June because the Ekadashi Tithi prevails during the sunrise period.

Why Is Parama Ekadashi Called the Supreme Ekadashi?
Also of interest is that all Ekadashi days are dedicated to worshiping Lord Vishnu. This shows that people will be allowed to fast in order to atone for past mistakes and accumulate spiritual merit through acts of devotion.
The uniqueness of the Parama Ekadashi fast, compared to the other Types/Ekadasi, is that it is referred to as "the Type/Ekadasi that is associated with Moksha".
The Bhagavad Gita tells us the importance of devotion toward Vishnu:
"अनन्याश्चिन्तयन्तो मां ये जनाः पर्युपासते।
तेषां नित्याभियुक्तानां योगक्षेमं वहाम्यहम्॥"
Those who worship the Lord with unwavering devotion receive divine protection and care.
This statement encapsulates what Parama Ekadashi represents, as true devotion is valued more highly than monetary offerings.

The well-known story of the true king Harishchandra who due to hard times lost his kingdom, wealth and family. After observing Parama Ekadashi with sincere faith and devotion, he was able to regain his kingdom, family and wealth.
Each of these represents devotion, patience and righteousness conquering the greatest difficulties of life.
Merit Equal to the Ashwamedha Yajna
Hindu texts clearly state that Parama Ekadashi is considered one of the most rewarding spiritual disciplines to follow.
Those who fast and worship Lord Vishnu at this time gain merit equivalent to performing the Ashwamedha Yajna, the most respected of all Vedic sacrifices.
Tradition also reflects back to Lord Krishna telling Arjuna that those who faithfully observe this Ekadashi and worship Lord Vishnu at that time attain Vaikuntha, Lord Vishnu's eternal abode.
One verse from the Bhagavad Gita expresses the spirit of devotion that accompanies this day:
पत्रं पुष्पं फलं तोयं यो मे भक्त्या प्रयच्छति।
तदहं भक्त्युपहृतमश्नामि प्रयतात्मनः॥
Whoever offers Me a leaf, a flower, a fruit, or water with devotion, I lovingly accept that offering.
