Have you ever wondered why Lord Jagannath travels in a chariot? Learn the date, history, rituals, and blessings of Rath Yatra 2026.

The Jagannath Rath Yatra is one of the most spectacular festivals of Hinduism, where millions of devotees physically wait all year long for him to come. With three enormous wooden chariots rolling down the streets of Puri, filled with the sounds of many, chanting, ringing conch shells, etc., there is a sense of pure joy and spiritual feelings in the air. Rath Yatra is more than just a festival. It is a divine spiritual journey that represents how the Lord shows compassion and chooses to be available to humanity with his loving grace.

What Is Rath Yatra?

The Rath Yatra is the yearly festival of the god Jagannath (the Lord's chariot's festival). The Rath is the chariot, and the Yatra is the journey/pilgrimage. This festivities is when Lord Jagannath and his two siblings, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra, leaves the temple of Jagannath, that is in Puri, and travels to their Gundicha temple to bestow blessings and homage to all the devotees on their decorated chariots.

What makes the Rath Yatra ceremony so unique is the message of oneness, equality, and inclusiveness that Lord Jagannath comes forth in the form of a chariot, to bless the people, regardless of caste, religion, or social status. The belief in this has made Rath Yatra one of the most popular festivals in the world among Hindus.

The Divine Meaning Behind Rath Yatra

The Rath Yatra event has great significance in terms of spirituality; in essence, the chariot represents the human body and Lord Jagannath, seated in the chariot, represents the soul of all living beings, giving divine direction to people as they travel through this life.

The Katha Upanishad contains a verse that beautifully illustrates these symbolic representations:

आत्मानं रथिनं विद्धि शरीरं रथमेव तु।

बुद्धिं तु सारथिं विद्धि मनः प्रग्रहमेव च॥

Know the soul as the passenger in the chariot and the body as the chariot itself. The intellect is the charioteer, and the mind acts as the reins.

This statement serves to remind us that it is our responsibility to travel through this life with good judgement and with love for God.

Which Deities Participate in the Rath Yatra?

Three sacred deities travel together during the procession:

  • Lord Jagannath – The Lord of the Universe

  • Lord Balabhadra – Elder brother of Jagannath

  • Devi Subhadra – Sister of Jagannath and Balabhadra

Each of the deities rides in a separate beautifully decorated, new wooden chariot that has been constructed according to ancient traditions.

History of Jagannath Rath Yatra

Historically, the Rath Yatra event is documented in multiple ancient texts such as the Skanda Purana, Brahma Purana, and Narada Purana.

The Legend of King Indradyumna

According to tradition, King Indradyumna of the Kalinga Kingdom had a divine vision that led him to build a temple and establish the worshipping of Lord Jagannath. He also discovered a sacred tree along the coast of Puri, which created the wooden bases (logs) that would be formed into the three deities by the god Vishwakarma, while hiding from the king.

However, upon the king's impatience, he opened the door before Vishwakarma had a chance to finish carving the three deities. Vishwakarma disappeared from the temple, leaving behind the unique unfinished sculptures of the three deities, Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra.

The divine inspired the King to worship Lord Jagannath in these forms as His chosen Divya Prakasa or forms of God that he could recognize as God. For this reason this sacred tradition has continued to be practised uninhibited for hundreds of years.

Important Rituals of Rath Yatra

Snana Purnima

Snana Purnima is the ceremonial bathing of the trinity before Rath Yatra with purified (sacred) water.

Anavasara Period

After bathing there is a period of rest for the deities. During this time public darshan is closed.

Chariot Procession

On Rath Yatra day all the deities are put onto their huge Chariots and pulled by thousands of devotees to the Gundicha Temple.

Gundicha Temple Stay

At the Gundicha Temple the deities will remain for a few days as if visiting their aunt's home.

Bahuda Yatra

The return trip from Gundicha Temple back to the Jagannath Temple is called Bahuda Yatra and is celebrated just as enthusiastically as the first half of the journey.

Divine Blessings of Participating in Rath Yatra

The Hindu scriptures explain that there is much spiritual benefit to witnessing or participating in the Rath Yatra celebration.

The Bhagavad Gita teaches:

पत्रं पुष्पं फलं तोयं यो मे भक्त्या प्रयच्छति।

तदहं भक्त्युपहृतमश्नामि प्रयतात्मनः॥ - (Bhagavad Gita 9.26)

"Whoever offers Me a leaf, a flower, a fruit, or water with devotion, I lovingly accept that offering."

This verse reinforces to devotees that heartfelt devotion is worth much more than any material offering.
