Guru Purnima 2026 Date and Auspicious Timings
Guru Purnima is celebrated on the Purnima Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Ashadha. According to Udaya Tithi, Guru Purnima falls on 29 July 2026. The holy day is also called Ashadha Purnima and signifies the start of the holy month of Sawan dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Why Is Guru Purnima Celebrated?
Purnima holds significant importance for the Hindus and marks the day of full moon. Followers wake up early in the morning, take bath in holy rivers such as Ganges, do charity, offer prayers and receive divine blessings.
Of all the purnimas in the Hindu calendar, Ashadha Purnima is the one which stands out as it is dedicated to Guru-Shishya Parampara, where one pays homage to their gurus, teachers, parents and all other knowledgeable persons who enlighten them with the path of righteousness and virtue through their teachings and guidance.
The importance of a guru is beautifully described in the Guru Gita:
गुरुर्ब्रह्मा गुरुर्विष्णुः गुरुर्देवो महेश्वरः।
गुरुः साक्षात् परं ब्रह्म तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः॥
The Guru is Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh (Shiva). The Guru is the embodiment of the Supreme Reality. Salutations to that revered Guru.
The above line from a beautiful verse signifies the important role of a Guru in the life of his disciples who helps them overcome their ignorance by imparting wisdom in them.
Why Is Guru Purnima Also Called Vyasa Purnima?
The most interesting part about the festival is that Guru Purnima is also called the Vyasa Purnima Day.
It celebrates the birth anniversary of the great sage Maharishi Krishna Dwaipayana Ved Vyasa. He was one of the finest Indian sages who compiled all the four Vedas and composed the famous epic Mahabharata.
In addition, Ved Vyasa is attributed with writing Brahma Sutras, compiling the eighteen Puranas and safeguarding the rich spiritual tradition of Sanatan Dharma for generations to come.
It is due to his immense contribution to Vedic learning that the devotees pay homage to Maharishi Ved Vyasa on this day. Many sampradayas celebrate this festival in memory of Ved Vyasa, hence, it is popularly known as Vyasa Purnima or Guru (Vyasa) Purnima.
As stated in Festivals, Fairs and Fasts of India by Shakti M. Gupta, Guru Purnima was originally celebrated through fasting, paying homage to Sage Ved Vyasa and praying for enlightenment. In ancient times, disciples paid homage to their gurus in respect on this day.
The book further states that there is a prevalent belief that the Beas river takes its name from Sage Ved Vyasa as he conducted penance near this river while writing Vedas, Mahabharata and Puranas.
The Spiritual Meaning of a Guru
The word Guru itself carries profound meaning. As explained by Sadhguru:
"Gu" means darkness, and "Ru" means the remover. A Guru is one who removes the darkness of ignorance.
Not only is a guru a teacher of academic information, but he is a teacher of proper thought process, righteousness, and transformation of mind and soul.
Mundaka Upanishad also explains the need to approach the realized master:
तद्विज्ञानार्थं स गुरुमेवाभिगच्छेत्।
To attain true spiritual wisdom, one should approach a knowledgeable Guru with humility and sincerity.
This philosophy is the rationale behind Guru Shishya Parampara forming one of the cornerstones of Sanatan Dharma.
