What happens when the spirit gates open during Ghost Month 2026? Discover the August 13 start date, Hungry Ghost Festival, ancient traditions, rituals, and spiritual beliefs.
Ghost Month of 2026 begins on August 13, which means that the beginning of one of the most ancient and interesting cultural customs of Asia starts from that date. According to beliefs that have been passed over generations, the gates of hell open allowing dead ancestors and wandering spirits to come from the underworld to the living. In this article, we will explore the meanings, important dates, customs, dos and don’ts, and religious significance of Ghost Month.

What Is Ghost Month?
Ghost Month is the 7th month according to the Chinese lunar calendar that is celebrated by the people of China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, and many more countries and communities in Asia.
We believe that during Ghost Month, the gates between the living and the dead are opened so that ancestors can attend the family and the wandering souls can also roam around freely.
Although Ghost Month has a reputation of being a month of ghost stories, it actually has a more profound purpose. The Ghost Month actually imparts respect for ancestors, compassion for lost souls, and thanks for the family traditions. The Ghost Month, according to Sanatangyan, is regarded as one of the traditions that remind us of our ties with the invisible world.

Ghost Month Ends: September 10, 2026
According to traditional belief:
On August 13, the gates of the underworld open.
On August 27, the fifteenth lunar day is considered the most spiritually significant.
On September 10, the gates close, and spirits return to the afterlife.
The Ancient Origins of Ghost Month
Ghost Month blends Buddhist, Taoist, and traditional Chinese folk beliefs.
Buddhism has one of the most famous stories about Mulian (Maudgalyayana). He utilized his spiritual abilities to realize that his dead mother had become a “hungry ghost” due to her past deeds. When he realized he could not save her on his own, he appealed to Buddha for help. On the fifteenth day of that month, Buddha instructed Mulian to give some food offerings to monks, and by doing this he was able to free his mother.
As a result, there was established the custom of Ullambana Festival, which is based on generosity and praying.
A teaching from the Dhammapada beautifully reflects this spirit:
"न हि वेरेन वेराणि सम्मन्तीध कुदाचन।
अवेरेन च सम्मन्ति, एष धम्मो सनन्तनो॥"
Hatred is never overcome by hatred; it is overcome only by compassion and kindness. This is the eternal truth.
Taoist tradition adds another belief—that the gates of the underworld open once each year, allowing spirits to visit the earthly world before returning to their realm.

Why Families Honor Ancestors During Ghost Month
For many families, Ghost Month is not about fear but about gratitude and remembrance.
People believe that honored ancestors continue to bless and protect future generations. Families therefore:
Burn incense.
Offer fruits, rice, tea, and cooked meals.
Burn joss paper (ghost money) for use in the afterlife.
Visit family altars and temples.
Pray for peace and protection.
The idea of honoring one’s parents and ancestors is very old and is found in many religions.
The Taittiriya Upanishad teaches:
"मातृदेवो भव। पितृदेवो भव॥"
Regard your mother and father as divine.
Even though the quoted verse belongs to Hinduism, it is in line with the idea of Ghost Month, which is respecting one’s ancestors.
