Have you ever dreamed of flying? Explore the spiritual and symbolic meaning of flying dreams in Sanatan wisdom.
People have long had a fascination with dreaming; flying dreams being one of the most beautiful and interesting dreams one can have. Many ancient scriptures and sages in Sanatan wisdom teach that such dreams often have a profound symbolic meaning. In some cases, through the lens of Sanatangyan, ancient shashtra, and the insight given by their wise guru or sadhu, dreams of flying are sometimes interpreted to mean that the dreamer is experiencing greater independence, increased spiritual development, or is about to achieve something significant in their life.

Dreaming of Flying Meaning
Dreams about flying are considered by many to be a strong symbol within spiritual traditions. Within the Sanatangyan tradition, flying is understood to represent the ascension of the soul beyond earthly attachments and limitations. When an individual has a dream in which they are able to fly freely through the sky, this can indicate that they will experience greater freedom from concerns and fears; and/or greater freedom from any kind of resistance.
Flying dreams have been explained in several ancient interpretations related to dream-like sections of the Garuda Purana as representing movement and advancement in life, or signs from the mind that it is seeking higher levels of consciousness.
A guiding Sanskrit verse often quoted by spiritual teachers is:
“उद्धरेदात्मनाऽत्मानं नात्मानमवसादयेत्।” — Bhagavad Gita 6.5
“Let a person lift oneself by the power of the self and never degrade oneself.”
Numerous sadhu traditions explain that dreams about flying show that the mind is attempting to transcend negativity. These dreams reflect the lightness and peacefulness of the soul and indicate a sense of inner freedom.
Different situations in flying dreams may carry different meanings:
Flying effortlessly in the sky: A sign of confidence and success approaching.
Flying with difficulty: The mind may be struggling with challenges.
Flying very high: Spiritual progress or expanding awareness.
Sanatangyan does not view flying dreams as mere coincidence or delusion but sees them as subtle reflections of the dreamer's internal state of being and spiritual development.

Why Do People See Flying Dreams?
According to ancient texts and various interpretations of gurus, dreams can be sourced from three different places, including thoughts or feelings, emotion, or an experience of some kind.
A very popular teaching from the Upanishads gives insight into how limitless the mind truly is:
“मन एव मनुष्याणां कारणं बन्धमोक्षयोः।” — Amritabindu Upanishad
“The mind alone is the cause of bondage and liberation.”
Based on this wisdom, flying dreams may occur due to several reasons:
1. Inner Desire for Freedom
At times, the mind wishes to relinquish burdens, pressures, or anything else that weighs heavily on it. When you dream of flying it could signify a desire for your spirit to be free from its constraints.
The unconscious wish to avoid burdens can manifest in the form of movement or travel or flying, according to many sadhu teachings.
2. Personal Growth and Confidence
If someone is experiencing difficulties in their life, the dream of flying may represent the ability to overcome those difficulties and have self-confidence. This is because the image of flying can be interpreted as a Definition of Self-Confidence.
From the perspective of Sanatangyan, the dream of flying is one of the most commonly experienced Dreams during Transition and Growth/Change of one’s mental or spiritual state; therefore it would not be unusual for an individual to experience Dream of Flying as part of their life journey.
3. Spiritual Awakening
Some people pursuing a spiritual path all report having experienced flying dreams after a period of intense meditation or self-reflection which represents a rise in consciousness toward infinite possibilities.
Ancient Yogic texts frequently discuss the soul's journey through movement toward light and freedom, which could be represented through the act of flying.

When Does the Result Manifest?
In many shastras, dreams are also categorized based on the time they occur during sleep. The Brihadaranyaka Upanishad discusses how dreams can reflect impressions stored in the mind.
A commonly cited Sanskrit wisdom verse states:
“यथा चिन्तयते मनः तत्त्वं भवति।”
“As the mind thinks and visualizes, so does reality gradually become.”
In traditional dream interpretations according to Sanatangyan philosophy, a dream's timing is likely to influence its physical experience.
Dreams seen early at night: Often connected to past thoughts and may not carry strong predictive meaning.
Dreams seen after midnight: Sometimes linked with subconscious emotions or unresolved issues.
Dreams seen during early morning (Brahma Muhurta): These symbols are often regarded as having significant meanings in various spiritual traditions, and therefore they can have more power and influence in the physical world.
Spiritual leaders remind us that we should not let our expectations of dreams fill us with fear or cause us to become blindly faithful; rather, we should accept our dreams with an open heart and wisdom.

Essentially, when dreaming about flying, we are expressing the desire of the mind and soul to have Freedom to grow and develop into a Higher Consciousness. The guidance of the Sanatangyan, Shastra and the wisdom of Guru and Sadhu, are like gentle reminders of the potential within all of us and the continuation of our Spiritual Path.
