Curious why weddings are avoided during Kharmas 2026? Find out the start and end dates, and how following Sanatangyan and shastras brings harmony and positive energy.
From March 15 to April 14, 2026, Kharmas will fall within the time period of Kharmas according to Vedic astrology and Sanatan Dharma. During Kharmas, no auspicious ceremonies (e.g., weddings, housewarmings, starting new business, mundan) are held. Instead of beginning new things, devotees concentrate their efforts on prayer, chant, charitable giving and spiritual practice as they relate to cosmic energies and inner cleansing.

When Does Kharmas Begin in 2026?
Kharmas 2026 Start Date: March 15, 2026
Kharmas Begins: 01:08 AM, March 15
Kharmas 2026 End Date: April 14, 2026
According to the Hindu shashtra, Kharmas is a period when the Sun transits through the zodiac signs Dhanu (Sagittarius) and Meen (Pisces). During these transits, the sanātan gyan of astrology teaches that the energy fields are not conducive to beginning new worldly engagements. The ancients—sadhu and guru—have passed down these teachings of favorable and unfavourable timings through texts and oral traditions.

Things To Do During Kharmas
Kharmas is considered highly suitable for spiritual and charitable activities. Devotees are encouraged to practice devotion, compassion and self-discipline through:
Daily Worship of Lord Vishnu: Reciting the Vishnu Sahasranama brings peace of mind and divine blessings.
Sun God Arghya: Offering water to the Sun while chanting “Om Suryaya Namah” strengthens vitality and spiritual energy.
Charity and Daan: Giving to the needy is highly meritorious and encouraged during this period.
Pilgrimage and Holy Bathing: If visiting holy sites is not possible, performing Ganga Jal snan at home provides purification.
Sacred Scriptures: Reading the Shiva Purana, reciting the Hanuman Chalisa, listening to Ramayana and Bhagavata Purana to obtain greater spiritual understanding and peace of mind.
The philosophy and meaning of Kharmas is echoed in the Bhagavad Gita.
कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन।
मा कर्मफलहेतुर्भूर्मा ते सङ्गोऽस्त्वकर्मणि॥
“You have the right to perform your duties, but you are not entitled to the fruits of your actions. Never consider yourself the cause of the results of your activities, nor be attached to inaction.” (Bhagavad Gita 2.47)
According to the counsel of both the Guru as well as the Sadhu and according to the understanding of Sanatangyan, this period becomes a time to reflect inward rather than pursue outwardly.

Things To Avoid During Kharmas
Kharmas is a period containing certain restrictions that are noted in the Vedic Shastras.
Weddings and Engagements: Celebrations of new unions are avoided due to inauspicious planetary alignments.
Starting New Business Ventures or Business Travel: Such actions may lead to obstacles, financial stress, or failure.
Wearing Janeu (Sacred Thread): This ritual is also avoided, as per astrological advice.
Housewarming Ceremonies or Property Purchases: Activities related to moving or buying property are not recommended.
Child’s Mundan Ceremony: The shaving of a child’s head is postponed until after Kharmas to ensure auspiciousness.
The limitations of the Kharmas are not merely a matter of superstition, but rather exist because they have a basis in Sanatangyan knowledge and are used to align human behaviour with Cosmic Laws therefore benefiting one's family and society.

Religious Significance of Kharmas
There are no auspicious rites that can be performed during Kharmas. However, Kharmas holds great importance within religion as it is a time to develop personal purity, devotion, and adherence to the dharmic laws.
Prayer and Chanting Mantras: Strengthens spiritual awareness and brings mental peace.
Performing Havan: Fire rituals purify the environment and invite blessings.
Reading Sacred Texts: Reading the Bhagavata Purana, Ramayana, or Shiva Purana improves your knowledge of sanatangyan and dharmic duties.
Helping the Needy: Acts of charity will add/accumulate to your positive karma, as well as fulfill the teachings of revered Sadhus.
“धर्मे चरन् धर्माणि सेवेत् सदा नरः सुखी भवेत्”
“A person who follows dharma and performs righteous deeds always attains happiness.”
Following the guidelines established by the guru and Shastras for each month of the Kharmas months, these guidelines have been adhered to by people for generations and enable a person to gain both spiritual and material benefits.

Kharmas is a time in 2026 to cease starting anything new and to instead concentrate on growing spiritually through charitable acts of worship. When we perform our actions according to the teachings of the guru, sadhu and sanatan gyan, we align our intentions with the universal principles of wisdom which allow us to build inner peace and harmony while waiting for the right time to start something new.
