Apara Ekadashi 2026 What Should You Do During the Sacred Fast and What Must You Avoid
Today, 13 May 2026, is a very important day for devotees of Lord Vishnu throughout India as they are celebrating their Apara Ekadashi with immense devotion. On this day, many believe that by observing Apara Ekadashi they can eliminate all sins, receive abundance, and gain spiritual benefits. From fasting rules and puja rituals to Parana timing and things to avoid, here is everything important to know about this auspicious day of worship.

Significance of Apara Ekadashi
The word “Apara” means limitless or boundless. Hindus believe that if an individual has sincere faith in the observance of this Ekadashi, they can obtain prosperity, peace and be free from their previous life's negative karma.
It is also believed that this Vrat (fasting) removes any bad karma that an individual may have produced unintentionally or intentionally. According to Hindu scriptures, even grave offences like showing disrespect to one's teacher, saints or elders can be forgiven through the sincere worship of Lord Vishnu on this day.
The greatness of Apara Ekadashi is described in ancient Hindu texts where Lord Krishna describes the importance of this fasting day to Yudhishthira.
“एकादश्यां उपोष्यैव सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते।”
A person who sincerely observes Ekadashi becomes free from sins and gains divine blessings.
In addition to removing sins and giving peace and prosperity, this sacred fast also gives an individual self-discipline, devotion, and inner purity.

Apara Ekadashi 2026 Date and Parana Timing
Apara Ekadashi fast is being observed today, Wednesday, 13 May 2026. Devotees observing the vrat will break their fast on 14 May during the Parana period.
Important Timing
Apara Ekadashi Vrat Date: 13 May 2026
Parana Date: 14 May 2026
Devotees are advised to complete the Parana within the recommended time after sunrise on Dwadashi.

Preparation for the Fast
Preparations for Apara Ekadashi usually begin one day earlier. From 12 May until after the end of the Apara Ekadashi puja on 13 May, the individual is to lead a sattvic lifestyle and keep his act and thoughts pure.
Things to Follow Before the Fast
Eat simple vegetarian food
Avoid onion and garlic
Keep the mind calm and positive
Avoid arguments and negative thoughts
If possible, avoid dinner before Ekadashi
By following a disciplined routine prior to the day of the Fast, one is to receive more blessings both physically and spiritually. In addition, according to Sanatangyan, being pure and devoted is equally as important as physical fasting.

Apara Ekadashi Puja Vidhi
The Apara Ekadashi puja(s) are to be performed with sincerity and simplicity. Devotees are to shower on the Apara Ekadashi morning (13 May), put on fresh clothes (preferably yellow or similarly colour clothes), and offer prayers to Lord Vishnu once they are ready after their bath to begin the nacht or night of Apara Ekadashi.
Place an idol or picture of Lord Vishnu on a clean yellow cloth or seat. Offer the following items during worship:
Incense sticks and lamp (diya)
Yellow flowers
Fruits and sweets
Tulsi leaves
Yellow clothes or offerings
Lord Vishnu is then worshipped with bhajans, Vishnu Sahasranama, and prayers.
One of the most powerful mantras to chant on this day is:
“ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय।”
Salutations to Lord Vasudeva, the supreme form of Lord Vishnu.
Devotees are encouraged to maintain faith when reciting the mantra, as this will help them to be peaceful, eliminate negativity, and receive God's benevolence.

Important Rule Related to Tulsi
While the Tulsi (basil) plant is particularly significant in the worship of Lord Vishnu, the tradition also states that devotees should not remove leaves from the plant on the holy day of Ekadashi.
Devotees should collect the required number of Tulsi leaves the day before the puja (worship) service. The offerings of Tulsi to Lord Vishnu are very sacred during a puja.
“तुलसीदलमात्रेण जलस्य चुलुकेन वा।
विक्रीणीत स्वमात्मानं भक्तेभ्यो भक्तवत्सलः॥”
Lord Vishnu becomes pleased even with a single Tulsi leaf offered with devotion.
This is why Tulsi worship remains an important part of Apara Ekadashi rituals.

What to Do During the Fast
Devotees observing Apara Ekadashi should spend the day in prayer, chanting, and spiritual activities. Reading or listening to the Ekadashi Vrat Katha is considered highly beneficial.
Some important things to do include:
Chant Vishnu mantras
Read Bhagavad Gita or Vishnu Sahasranama
Perform evening aarti
Donate food or clothes to the needy
Distribute prasad among devotees
At Sanatangyan, spiritual practices like charity and kindness are considered powerful ways to increase the blessings of Ekadashi fasting.
Maintaining a peaceful mind and speaking politely throughout the day is also considered part of the vrat discipline.

What to Avoid on Apara Ekadashi
There are certain important rules that should be followed carefully during the fast.
Things to Avoid
Eating rice and grains
Consuming onion, garlic, meat, or alcohol
Speaking harshly or becoming angry
Negative thinking and arguments
Plucking Tulsi leaves
Sleeping excessively during the daytime
Even people who are unable to observe a complete fast are advised to avoid rice on Ekadashi, as it is considered spiritually inauspicious on this day.
In conclusion, Apara Ekadashi 2026, is a great day of praying and being devoted to Lord Vishnu through fasting, and the consciousness of being pure, as well as through following the vrat (fast) exactly, so that one can receive peace from God, progress in life spiritually, and receive God's benevolence.
