Tirumala: A Spiritual Epicenter Amidst the Holiday Rush

On Sunday, following the declaration of Intermediate exam results, Tirumala witnessed a remarkable increase in pilgrim numbers. By 7 pm, over 54,000 devotees had completed darshan, with waiting times stretching up to 16 hours. The long weekend, with Monday being a holiday for Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s birth anniversary, made the crowds even bigger. This led to longer lines and a higher demand for places to stay.

The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) reported that on Saturday alone, 72,923 pilgrims had darshan, with 35,571 offering tonsure as part of their vows. On that day, the Hundi collection reached ₹3.33 crore, showing the strong devotion of the visitors. Accommodation was fully booked, with no cottages, choultries, or guest houses available. Many pilgrims, especially those without bookings, had to rest in open areas and under the shade.

TTD responded to the enormous crowd by bringing in additional staff to control the situation. They ensured that there was enough provision of critical services like drinking water, medical attention, and sanitary facilities. The authorities requested pilgrims who did not have booked tokens to come during the days when there was lesser foot traffic. They also asked for cooperation from everyone so that the temple processes could run without hitches.

The Rise of Spiritual Tourism in India

The increase in visitors at Tirumala is part of a bigger trend in India, where spiritual tourism is growing rapidly. A report by News9live shows that the ongoing Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj has led to a 21.4% rise in spiritual travel. This growth is mainly due to major religious events like the Maha Kumbh and other festivals, which bring millions of tourists each year.

The trend is also seen in smaller cities like Ayodhya, Ujjain, Badrinath, and Amritsar. These places are getting more attention. Searches for them have increased a lot. This shows that more people are choosing spiritual trips during the holiday season.
