Why do unmarried women observe Sawan Somwar 2026 vrat? Discover its spiritual significance, puja vidhi, Shiva mantras, fasting rules, and benefits.

Sawan Somwar in 2026 starts on Monday, August 3, 2026, which is the beginning of one of the holiest fasting vows dedicated to Lord Shiva. Starting from its immense spiritual significance to its unique belief related to the unmarried women, this vrat is believed to be one of the strongest means of achieving devotion, inner strength, and blessings from the divine God. Below is everything you need to know about this vow including its significance, puja and sacred mantra.

Why Is the First Sawan Somwar So Special in 2026?

One of the most pious months of worshipping Lord Shiva is the month of Sawan (Shravan). All the Mondays of this month are considered as sacred, however, the first Sawan Somwar in the coming year, commencing from Monday, August 3, 2026, is highly sacred as it marks the beginning of the month long devotion.

As per the Hindu beliefs, Lord Shiva drank the deadly poison during Samudra Manthan (Churning of the Ocean). By offering water, milk and other cooling elements to the Shivling, devotees believe that they can soothe Lord Shiva during Sawan.

The power of devotion to Lord Shiva is aptly explained by Shiva Purana.

शिवपूजापरो नित्यं शिवनामपरायणः।

सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तः शिवलोकं स गच्छति॥

One who regularly worships Lord Shiva and chants His holy name becomes free from sins and ultimately attains the divine abode of Shiva.

This age-old lesson continues to be inspirational for millions of devotees, and sanatangyan suggests that one should understand the real spiritual significance behind these practices.

Why Do Unmarried Women Observe Sawan Somwar Vrat?

One of the popular traditions in association with Sawan Somwar is the observance of vrat by unmarried women.

It is believed that according to Hindu mythology, Goddess Parvati undertook severe penance for several years to get Lord Shiva as her husband. This unwavering devotion, patience, and faith formed an exemplary model of spiritual dedication.

Inspired by this tale, unmarried women fast on the occasion of Sawan Somwar for the following things:

  • A loving and virtuous life partner

  • A happy and harmonious married life

  • Strong family relationships

  • Divine blessings for future happiness

The vrat is not merely an attempt to get a good husband. It actually stands for acquiring virtues like patience, devotion, discipline, and faith.

Even married women fast during this occasion and pray for the longevity, happiness, and prosperity of their family members and husbands.
