One story that resonated deeply among the bhaktas of Sant Tukaram, is the account of how, during Sant Tukaram's satsang, Shivaji Maharaj was being perused to be captured by Mughal soldiers and they could not see him due to Sant Tukaram’s divine spiritual powers. This truly reflects how the unity of both bhakti and bravery helped to protect Sanatan Dharma through was periods of difficulty.

The Deep Spiritual Bond Between Shivaji Maharaj and Sant Tukaram
In addition to being a warrior king and a warrior king, Shivaji Maharaj is among the many holy kings who holds a respected place in Maharashtra's spiritual history as a devoted and humble devotee and who had a very close three part relationship with other spiritual figures, especially Sant Tukaram Maharaj (Bhakta of Lord Vithoba).
Bhakti parampara and historical accounts describe how Shivaji Maharaj attended Sant Tukaram's kirtans and satsangs on a regular basis and as a dedicated follower and as a king would always humble himself to sit among the feet of those who he was part of.
The foundation of Sant Tukaram’s teachings is to re-establish our relationship with Allah through bhakti, surrender to Bhagavan and to renounce the false illusion of pride and ego. Abhangas that he composed will change both regular individuals (bhaktas) and king type individuals.
One famous Sanskrit verse from the Bhagavad Gita perfectly reflects this spirit of devotion:
अनन्याश्चिन्तयन्तो मां ये जनाः पर्युपासते।
तेषां नित्याभियुक्तानां योगक्षेमं वहाम्यहम्॥ — Bhagavad Gita 9.22
Those who worship Bhagavan with exclusive devotion are always protected by Him.
Devotees believe this divine protection surrounded both Sant Tukaram and Shivaji Maharaj.

The Miracle: Why the Mughals Couldn’t See Shivaji Maharaj
According to devotional lore in Maharashtra, Mughal soldiers once learned that Shivaji Maharaj was attending a satsang led by Sant Tukaram. Hoping to capture him, they surrounded the area during the spiritual gathering.
However, something extraordinary happened.
Sant Tukaram's overwhelming bhakti-shakti and spiritual power created such an aura around him that soldiers of the Mughal Empire could not see Shivaji Maharaj even though he was physically present in the crowd. He was able to have darshan during the satsang without being recognized by the Mughal soldiers and leave unscathed.
The event is viewed in bhakti traditions not merely as a miracle but rather as a metaphor for how much faith and the divine can protect us through pure devotion and grace. Many of the Puranas and other Hindu scriptures discuss how the great saints are able to transcend the limitations of their physical being through their devotion to Bhagavan.
Another powerful Sanskrit verse often associated with saintly protection is:
नाहं वसामि वैकुण्ठे योगिनां हृदये न च।
मद्भक्ता यत्र गायन्ति तत्र तिष्ठामि नारद॥
Bhagavan says, “I do not only reside in Vaikuntha or in the hearts of yogis. I reside wherever My devotees sing My glories.”
For devotees, Sant Tukaram’s satsang became a spiritually protected space filled with divine presence.
At Sanatangyan, such stories are seen not simply as legends but as reflections of how bhakti can uplift and protect dharma during times of danger.

Sant Tukaram’s Bhakti and Spiritual Power
Sant Tukaram Maharaj remains one of the greatest saints of the Varkari sampradaya. His abhangas continue to inspire millions of devotees across India.
His teachings emphasized:
Constant remembrance of God
Humility and surrender
Equality among devotees
Freedom from pride and attachment
Bhakti as the highest spiritual path
In fact, the bhakti of Sant Tukaram to Lord Vithoba was so strong, that the bhakti of Sant Tukaram is represented in some traditional stories as being spiritually beyond the material world.
One famous Sanskrit verse explains the greatness of devotion:
भक्त्या मामभिजानाति यावान्यश्चास्मि तत्त्वतः। — Bhagavad Gita 18.55
“Only through devotion can the Supreme truly be understood.”
The belief that saints such as Tukaram Maharaj were above the limits of physical existence is one of the main reasons that many devotees see and feel this great love and connection with these saints.

Sant Tukaram’s Departure to Vaikuntha
Another extraordinary belief connected to Sant Tukaram Maharaj is his departure from Earth. According to the Varkari tradition, Tukaram Maharaj did not experience ordinary death.
Devotees believe a divine vimana descended from Vaikuntha, and Sant Tukaram bodily ascended to the spiritual world in front of witnesses. This event remains one of the most famous spiritual narratives in Maharashtra’s devotional history.
From a scholarly perspective, historians describe such accounts as sacred hagiography — devotional biographies expressing spiritual truths. But within bhakti parampara, these events are accepted as genuine transcendental occurrences.
The Srimad Bhagavatam repeatedly glorifies pure devotees and their connection with the divine realm:
साधवो हृदयं मह्यं साधूनां हृदयं त्वहम्।
“The saints are in My heart, and I am in the hearts of the saints.”
For devotees, Sant Tukaram Maharaj embodied this divine relationship completely.
Sant Tukaram and Shivaji Maharaj’s story reminds us that true bhakti and faith always protect dharma. Their divine bond continues to inspire millions across Bharat even today.
