Repeated Hiccups (बार-बार हिचकी आना): Is Someone Remembering You, Spiritual Sign or Allergy?

Is repeated hiccups (बार-बार हिचकी आना) a sign that someone is remembering you, or just a medical condition? Explore spiritual and scientific views with Sanatangyan.

Repeated hiccups are usually seen as a normal body reaction. But in Indian traditions and spiritual beliefs, they are thought to have deeper meanings. There is an ongoing debate about how and/or why a person gets repeated hiccups; there are many possibilities, including: (i) that repeated hiccups mean that somebody thinks of you, and (ii) that hiccups are caused by the body having various health problems, such as allergies and/or digestive disorders.  This article will take an easy-to-read look at both the spiritual and medical aspects surrounding repeated hiccups and will explore the theories behind hiccups based on the ancient wisdom of the Sanatangyan traditions.

What Are Repeated Hiccups?

How Do Hiccups Occur in Hindi? – Hiccups are also known as “हिचकी” [hichki] in the Hindi language. Hiccups are caused by involuntary reactions of the body, through the sudden contraction of the diaphragm (the muscle below your lungs) without any control and/or a rapid inhalation, which are immediately stopped from entering in the airway via the closure of the vocal cords.  This quick inhalation and subsequent vocal closure creates a sound; produces a noise like the word “hic.”

From a medical point of view, this can happen due to:

  • Eating too fast

  • Drinking carbonated beverages

  • Sudden temperature changes

  • Acid reflux or stomach irritation

  • Allergies or nervous system triggers

In Indian culture, and particularly Sanatangyan culture, it is thought that a person will not always interpret the symptoms of hiccups only as a physical response of the body.

Spiritual Meaning: Is Someone Remembering You?

In Indian spiritual beliefs, repeated hiccups are often seen as a sign that someone is thinking about you. This belief is commonly shared in families and traditional communities.

According to Sanatangyan philosophies, occasional reactions are signs of energy exchange between people; therefore, the act of thinking of someone, having intense feelings of love towards somebody, showing care towards somebody, or having a strong desire to see someone (vibrating energy) can be interpreted as causing some type of reaction in your body. These vibrations may show up as hiccups.

A commonly shared belief says:

  • Sudden hiccups = someone is talking about you

  • Continuous hiccups = strong emotional remembrance

However, it is important to understand that these ideas are based on culture and beliefs. They are symbolic in nature. They are not medically proven.

Still, these beliefs add emotional meaning to everyday experiences. They also create a sense of curiosity. This is why they are often shared in stories and passed down as cultural wisdom.

“यथा भावो तथा भवति”

As the feeling is, so becomes the experience.

Ayurvedic Explanation of Repeated Hiccups

According to Ayurveda, hiccups are linked to an imbalance in Vata dosha, which controls movement in the body, including breathing and nerve signals. When Vata becomes disturbed due to an irregular diet, stress, or exposure to cold, hiccups may happen more often.

A classical Ayurvedic principle states:

“आयुर्वेदः अमृतानां शरीरस्य च रक्षणम्।”

Ayurveda is the science of life and the protector of the body.

In sanatangyan, Ayurveda is not just seen as a medical system. It is a way to keep balance between the body, mind, and spirit. Repeated hiccups are often treated with simple remedies. These include herbal solutions, warm water, and calming practices to restore internal balance.

Can Allergies or Health Issues Cause Hiccups?

Yes, in certain instances, such as when a person is suffering from allergies or some other digestive-affiliated issues, hiccups can be created physiologically. For example, a person suffering from acid reflux or a stomach irritation may create a physical response that could be interpreted as hiccups, or some medications could also potentially cause problems within the diaphragm muscle that may exhibit as hiccups.

According to Ayurvedic thought in sanatangyan, an imbalance in Vata dosha can cause irregular movements in the body. This can also include hiccups.

Another Sanskrit principle states:

“शरीरमाद्यं खलु धर्मसाधनम्”

The body is the primary instrument for all activities of life.

This emphasizes the importance of maintaining bodily health to avoid such disturbances.

Spiritual or Scientific – Finding the Balance

Repeated hiccups are linked to both belief and biology. On one side, cultural beliefs connect them with emotions and remembrance. On the other side, science explains them as physical reactions with clear causes.

Both perspectives offer value:

  • Spiritual view brings emotional meaning and cultural depth

  • Scientific view ensures health awareness and proper care

The aim of Sanatangyan is to have knowledge of both sides; not to pick one side over the other. To create harmony between the ancient world and the present-day world.

In conclusion, persistently recurring hiccups could be interpreted in two different ways: spiritually and scientifically. Spiritual traditions of Sanatan Dharm recognised that a person is emotionally connected to another person if they experience repetitive hickups after drinking the same water or consuming the same food. On the other hand, modern-day medical scientists define hiccups in terms of the physical aspects of the body (i.e. a physical reaction). It is preferential to respect these cultural beliefs while also providing for your health and listening to your body.
