What Is Parivartini Ekadashi and Why Is It Special?

Parivartini Ekadashi falls on the Shukla Paksha Ekadashi of the Bhadrapada month. It is also known as Parsva Ekadashi, Vamana Ekadashi, Jal Jhilani Ekadashi and Padma Ekadashi. The day is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, who is believed to change his sleeping position during Chaturmas.

According to religious tradition, this occasion symbolises a divine transition in Lord Vishnu's cosmic sleep. Devotees worship Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi with prayers, fasting, mantra chanting and offerings.

Devotees consider the practice spiritually important to earn the divine grace of Lord Vishnu and become free from past sins through spiritual purity. In Hindu practices, sincere devotion and observance of the vrat are thought to earn spiritual punya as per tradition.

What Is Ekadashi Parana?

Parana refers to the act of breaking a religious fast. Parana of Ekadashi is usually done on Dwadashi Tithi that follows Ekadashi, after sunrise, within the auspicious time.

As per the traditional guidelines stated in Drik Panchang, devotees should do Parana within Dwadashi Tithi unless the tithi ends before sunrise. Fasting should not be broken during Hari Vasara, the first fourth part of Dwadashi tithi.

It is best to break the fast within the Pratahkal, i.e., morning period. Devotees should consider their local Panchang as sunrise times may differ from one city to other cities.

What If You Cannot Break the Fast in the Morning?

Breaking of the fast in the morning is recommended in traditional Hinduism, but devotees who cannot break their fast in the Pratahkal can do it according to the prescribed time.

According to Drik Panchang:

  • Avoid breaking the fast during Hari Vasara.

  • Complete Parana during the recommended morning window whenever possible.

  • When it is not feasible to do so, the general instructions suggest breaking the fast after Madhyahna with reference to the appropriate Dwadashi rules.

According to the Panchang of the region, one must consult the help of either a calendar or family custom to know the time when the fast ends.

How to Break the Parivartini Ekadashi Fast

Devotees can follow these customary steps on Dwadashi:

  • Wake up early and bathe: Begin the day with personal cleanliness and a peaceful state of mind.

  • Offer prayers to Lord Vishnu: Worship Shri Hari at the home altar with devotion. Offer flowers, a diya, incense and suitable naivedya.

  • Offer Tulsi and Panchamrit: Tulsi leaves and Panchamrit are traditionally offered to Lord Vishnu as part of the puja.

  • Make a charitable offering: Donate food grains, clothes or dakshina to a needy person according to your ability.

  • Offer food to the deity: Present rice or another suitable sattvic preparation as naivedya, following your family's vrat tradition.

  • Consume the prasad: After completing the worship, break the fast with the offered Tulsi leaves, Panchamrit or suitable prasad, according to your fasting practice.

It represents the worship or devotion of Lord Vishnu as well. In this ritual, one worships and fasts in a proper way rather than doing any preparation specially for it.

Which Mantra Can You Chant During Parana?

The devotees may recite the below-mentioned Vishnu mantra while performing the prayers for Dwadashi fasting.

॥ ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय ॥

Salutations to Lord Vasudeva, the Supreme Divine Being.

The significance of devotion in offerings to God has been clearly mentioned in Bhagavad Gita as follows:

पत्रं पुष्पं फलं तोयं यो मे भक्त्या प्रयच्छति।

तदहं भक्त्युपहृतमश्नामि प्रयतात्मनः॥ — Bhagavad Gita 9.26

Lord Krishna says that he accepts a leaf, flower, fruit, or water offered with devotion and a pure heart.

Parivartini Ekadashi Parana will be on September 23, 2026. Perform it according to Muhurat and get blessings from Lord Vishnu.
