Puja Muhurat and Ritual Timings

  • Date: Friday, June 6th, 2025

  • Tithi: Jyeshtha Shukla Ekadashi

  • Puja Muhurat: From 2:15 AM (June 6) to 4:47 AM (June 7)

On this day, people who follow Sanatangyan traditions worship Lord Vishnu by fasting, praying, and doing special rituals. Even though it can be physically difficult, they accept the challenge because they believe it brings great spiritual benefits.

Why Nirjala Ekadashi Is So Special

There are 24 Ekadashi fasts in a year, each carrying its own spiritual merit. However, Nirjala Ekadashi stands out for its intensity. The name itself means "without water," making it a complete fast — no food, no drink, nothing from sunrise to the next sunrise.

According to Sanatangyan beliefs, keeping this single fast is equivalent to observing all 24 Ekadashi fasts combined. That's right — fasting for one day gives you the spiritual benefits of a whole year. This fast is more than just a ritual. It’s a way to cleanse your spirit. It helps remove bad karma. It also opens the path for positive energy to flow into your life.

In a world where we always seek comfort, Nirjala Ekadashi reminds us that real growth often comes from sacrifice and willpower. By giving up physical needs for one day, devotees can connect more deeply with the spiritual world, which is a key teaching in Sanatangyan philosophy.

The Story of Bhima and Nirjala Ekadashi

A fascinating tale from the Mahabharata gives Nirjala Ekadashi its deeper meaning and emotional resonance. Bhima, one of the five Pandava brothers, was known for his mighty strength and enormous appetite. Unlike his brothers, who observed every Ekadashi fast with ease, Bhima struggled with hunger.

Driven by desperation, Bhima sought the help of his grandfather, Sage Vyasa, who instantly grasped that while seeking help, Bhima’s true intent was to leave behind the pleasantries of food and grow spiritually. Therefore, Vyasa told Bhima about the fasting ritual of Nirjala Ekadashi.

“There are countless benefits of fasting, but the most rewarding is the ability to connect with the divine, so if you devote yourself during the fast without water or food, you shall reap the benefits of all 24 Ekadashis,” said Vyasa.

This shows the simple concept that a sincere act performed with undivided intention and love can lead to immense spiritual blessings. After accepting Vyasa’s challenge and confidently performing the fast, Bhima ensured he achieved tangible results. Post which, it became common to refer to Nirjala Ekadashi as Bhimaseni Ekadashi.

Spiritual Lessons from Nirjala Ekadashi

Most importantly, these teachings provide great knowledge, particularly given the pace of modern life.

  • Discipline Over Comfort: True transformation often requires stepping out of our comfort zone.

  • Sincerity Over Perfection: As Bhima’s story shows, what matters is the intent and effort, not perfection.

  • Power of One: Mental devotion for even a single day can exceed the results of countable half-hearted attempts.

  • Universal Access: It is important to note that the fast is open to all, and this in itself is a reminder that the path of Sanatangyan is compassionate and broad.

Due to the motivating story of Bhima, this selfless fast has been observed for quite a long time because it encourages people to show their determination and grit. In addition, no matter if someone is well versed with these practices or a beginner, with Nirjala Ekadashi everyone can hit pause, cleanse, and reconnect with their true inner divinity.
