The Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, has seen a big rise in visitors, with over 1.43 crore people attending on just one day. The total number of devotees who have taken a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam has now passed 60 crore. Originally, the Uttar Pradesh government expected about 45 crore devotees for this year’s Mahakumbh, but the actual number has far exceeded that prediction.

The Uttar Pradesh government has stated that the number of devotees is expected to surpass 65 crore by the final "amrit snan" on February 26, during Maha Shivratri. This huge turnout highlights the Kumbh Mela's importance as a major spiritual and cultural event worldwide.

The Spiritual Significance of the Mahakumbh

The Mahakumbh is more than just a ritual; it’s a spiritual journey for millions of Sanatan followers who believe the sacred waters of the Triveni Sangam can purify and save them. The Mela started on January 13 and has been going strong, attracting pilgrims from all over India and beyond. Devotees come to take a dip at the confluence of the three holy rivers—the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati—to cleanse themselves of sins and seek blessings for a prosperous life.

As per government sources, over 55% of India’s Sanatan followers, which amount to more than half of India’s 110 crore population, have already bathed in the Sangam waters. This is a very large number. It shows that most people have taken part in this sacred ritual.

According to Pew Research 2024, there are around 120 crore Sanatan followers worldwide. More than half of them have taken a dip in the Triveni Sangam during the Mahakumbh, making it one of the biggest religious gatherings in the world.

Over 65 Crore Devotees Expected by Mahakumbh’s End

Apart from the massive participation from India, the Mahakumbh Mela has also attracted devotees from Nepal, the maternal home of Goddess Sita. Over 50 lakh devotees from Nepal have taken part in this sacred event. The variety of pilgrims at the Mela shows how widely this spiritual event is loved. People from different cultures and countries come together to experience its holiness.

As the Maha Shivratri approaches, the final sacred bath, expected to take place on February 26, will witness even higher attendance. The number of devotees is expected to go over 65 crore by the end of the event. This shows the growing devotion and spiritual energy of the Kumbh Mela. It inspires not only Indian devotees but also Sanatan followers around the world.
