What Is the Significance of Karwa Chauth?

Karwa Chauth is a Hindu festival celebrated by women for a good husband's long life, healthy and happy married life. Some young girls also take a fast and pray for finding a good boy as a life partner.

This festival is observed on the Krishna Paksha Chaturthi of the Hindu month of Kartik. Women observe the fast from morning till moonrise, worshiping Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha and Lord Kartikeya.

It also sings the romantic tune of married life and presents love, devotion, and togetherness of a married couple. As the tradition goes, the pujas is done with faith and affection seeking the blessings for happy wedded life.

Karwa Chauth 2026 Step-by-Step Puja Vidhi

Karwa Chauth first-timers need not have to think about the sequence of the rituals and prayers. For women, it will be a simple and easy Karwa Chauth experience.

1. Eat Sargi Before Sunrise

The morning starts with 'sargi' – a pre dawn meal sent or cooked by the mother-in-law. This consists of fruits, dryfruits and sweets, mathri and other health foods.

Sargi is there to energize you before starting off the day long fast. Women normally consume Sargi before the local sunrise and can drink enough water while fasting if they follow the conventional fast of consuming water before the sunrise.

2. Take a Vrat Sankalp

Post sargi, women take a sankalp or a vow for welcoming the fast whole-heartedly. The fast starts from sunrise and ends when the moon is seen.

Some women keep a nirjala vrat (meaning no food or water). Not all women, but many choose to go without food and water for fasting. If women have a health concern or pregnancy they should see a doctor instead of risking dehydration.

3. Get Ready and Prepare for Puja

In the morning, the bride can do mehchi, bride, jewellery shopping, wear traditional dress and adorn herself with bangles, bindis and other indicative of suhag. Bright colours like red, maroon, etc. are good options.

Pre-order the puja thali and other ritual items for the ease of the evening preparation.

4. Perform the Evening Karwa Chauth Puja

In the evening, clean the puja space and keep the idols / pictures of Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha and Lord Kartikeya in the puja room.

Enter a ghee diya, lay out flowers, incense, roli, rice and sweets, and take vows for your married life to be blessed with happiness and also for the prosperity of your family. The Karwa Chauth vrat katha is then read or listened to, often in a group of women, who take turns with their thali in hand.

5. Sight the Moon and Break the Fast

As soon as the moon emerges in the sky, women observe it through a sieve called Channi. The woman would then observe her husband's face through the same sieve, and the woman would give water to the moon (Chandra Arghya).

The fasting is broken with one sip of water and a bite of something sweet or a snack after the prayer, in every family, the husband is usually the one who gives the first sip of water and a bite to his wife.

Karwa Chauth 2026 Moon Sighting Traditions

The Moon is the most treasured moment of the day in Karwa Chauth. Women in the traditional way end the fast after seeing the Moon and performing the thettikaran.

Follow these steps:

  • Locate the Moon: Move to a safe, open spot with a clear view of the evening sky.

  • Light the diya: Keep the prepared puja thali nearby.

  • View the Moon through the channi: This is a widely followed Karwa Chauth tradition.

  • Look at the husband's face through the sieve: The ritual symbolises love, togetherness, and prayers for a lasting marriage.

  • Offer arghya: Offer water to the Moon while praying for happiness and family well-being.

  • Break the fast: Traditionally, the husband offers the wife a sip of water, followed by a sweet.

The evening puja can be held any time after the moon rises, so refer to the city-specific timings.

Karwa Chauth 2026 is all about love, affection and married life bliss. Take the aid of the Karwa Chauth puja vidhi, make the samagri a day before, and observe the fast with Moon sighting rituals and the wife's prayer.
