Can you honor Kanya Puja during periods? Learn how tradition, devotion, and modern understanding come together for Ashtami 2026.
Kanya Pujan is held throughout homes across India as Ashtami approaches, which is one of Navratri's major celebrations. Kanya Pujan is meant to celebrate each of those little girls as goddesses. Girls receive food, gifts, and blessings during this ritual, which is filled with joy; however, many people wonder whether it is acceptable to perform this ritual while on your period. This article will discuss some traditional beliefs about Kanya Puja, some modern interpretations of Kanya Puja, some practical suggestions for how to choose the right way to perform Kanya Puja in accordance with your devotion to the goddess, while at the same time ensuring that you feel comfortable.

Can Kanya Pujan Be Performed During Periods?
Traditionally, the shastric texts advise women who are menstruating to refrain from physically participating in rituals such as Kanya Puja. The justification is generally based on the belief that physical separation promotes rest and hygiene, as well as spiritual purity. In some communities, women are encouraged to refrain from preparing bhog or taking part in a religious ceremony until the fourth or fifth day of their period. ─
The Bhavishya Purana mentions:
"स्रावणकाले स्त्रियः पूजा एव न कुर्युः।"
“During menstruation, women are advised not to perform direct worship.”
However, Sanatangyan teachings also indicate that a woman's menstrual cycle is a natural part of the way in which the goddess provides for her devotees. Current-day practitioners and researchers have noted that devotion is accomplished through intention rather than simply through one's physical condition. Therefore, if a devotee wishes to be respectfully involved with the Kanya Puja, they may do so by either offering to the puja or observing from a distance. In instances where a menstruating woman is part of the family or is a priest, the family member or priest will perform the puja while the menstruating woman participates at a distance, thus enabling all parties to fulfill their devotion to the goddess.
This teaching provides the foundation for Sanatangyan practice, which is that devotion is greater than the ceremonial aspect of their rituals. The Manusmriti and Vedic literature guide us to seek true Dharma based on a fundamental understanding rather than conforming to superficial customs.

Performing Kanya Puja with Respect
To participate in the Kanya Pujan ceremony, we bathe the feet of young girls, prepare and serve them something to eat, and give them a few gifts of our love – treating them as if they are a manifestation of Goddess Durga. Even if menstruating, one can participate in the ritual through sanatangyan-endorsed methods, such as offering prasadam from a distance, arranging the puja setup, or reciting sacred mantras. A verse from the Skanda Purana beautifully emphasizes the sanctity of such devotion:
कन्या पूजनं हि परमं पुण्यं तस्मात् सर्वदा कुरु।
“Worshipping young girls is the highest virtue; hence, always perform it with devotion.”
At a distance or in person, we honor the essence of devotion through our good intentions.

As a final point, we can respectfully celebrate Kanya Puja during Ashtami 2026 while being menstrating. Traditions of Sanatangyan show that true bhakti is not only about the physical aspects of performing a ritual, but rather the primary importance of the performance lies in the intention, participation, and level of respect shown while performing the rituals.
