Kamada Ekadashi Vrat Rituals

The rituals associated with Kamada Ekadashi are performed with utmost devotion and discipline. This includes fasting and praying, in addition to providing aid to others through charity.

1. Fasting

Fasting is the main practice of Kamada Ekadashi. Devotees avoid eating grains and certain foods. Some choose a Nirjala fast, which means no water. Others may eat fruits and drink milk to keep their energy up.

2. Puja and Offerings

Devotees offer Tulsi leaves, flowers, and food to perform special prayers for Lord Vishnu. They also chant his mantras. Singing bhajans during the fast is another custom.

3. Night Vigil

As a form of devotion, many pilgrims devote all their nights. In the process, they sing songs of devotion and pay obeisance to Vishnu. This vigil is an important part of the observance. It allows them to maintain their concentration on shraddha and spirituality during the night.

4. Charity

On Kamada Ekadashi, performing service activities such as donating to the needy is considered very noble. One of the aims of the fast is to donate food, clothes and other basic needs to the needy. This allows worshippers to achieve spiritual merits.

5. Parana (Breaking the Fast)

Traditionally, the fast is broken on the Dwadashi Tithi which follows Ekadashi. It is important that one breaks the fast at the correct time. For most people the ideal time would be in the morning during 06:03 AM to 08:35 AM on the 9th of April, as for them it is best to have it before noon. It should not, however, be broken before midday and must not be during Hari Vasara, or the first part of Dwadashi.

6. Observing the Fast on Two Days

Some devotees observe the fast for two consecutive days:

  • Smartha devotees (householders) typically observe the fast on the first day.

  • Sanyasis, widows, and those seeking moksha (liberation) fast on the second day.

  • For those who follow the Sanatan Dharma tradition, fasting for two days is considered an excellent way to deepen devotion and cleanse the soul of past sins.
