Jyeshtha Amavasya 2026: Don’t Buy These Things Today To Avoid Negative Energy

Planning purchases on Jyeshtha Amavasya 2026? Discover the traditional Hindu beliefs about items that may attract negativity if bought on this sacred day.

2026 is expected to have one of the most powerful Amavasya (new moon) days when it comes to spirituality. This day is known as Jyeshtha Amavasya, and will not only be the day of the New Moon, but has also been designated for blessing for success with Shani Jayanti (the birthday of Lord Shani) and Vat Savitri Vrat (the festival celebrated by married women whose husbands wish them long life). Devotees throughout India observe certain customs, such as fasting, performing prayers for deceased ancestors through tarpan rituals, worshipping Lord Shani (the planet Shani will be in the astrological sign of Taurus that day), following specific "do's and don't's" about what to do or not do to “attract” positive energy to themselves, and asking for the blessings of the Lord for themselves.

When Is Jyeshtha Amavasya 2026?

In addition to more common Amavasyas, according to the Hindu Panchang, Jyeshtha Amavasya will occur on Saturday, May 16, 2026 and in conjunction with Shani Jayanti and Vat Savitri Vrat, the two most auspicious occasions according to astrology devoted to Lord Shani.

Important spiritual timings for the day include:

  • Auspicious time for स्नान (holy bath) and दान (charity): Morning till noon

  • Best time for पितृ तर्पण and ancestor prayers: After sunrise

  • Shani Dev worship timing: Morning and Pradosh Kaal

  • Peepal tree worship: Before sunset

Many devotees visit the temple to offer black sesame seeds and mustard oil to remove negative planetary energies associated with the planets (especially Saturn), along with giving away deepdaan (donations of deepak or lamps) to help the deceased who have passed away as a result of disobedience to God and/or poor karma.

Things You Should Avoid Buying on Jyeshtha Amavasya 2026

Purchasing certain items is believed by most in Hinduism to cause negative energy that is attracted to your home; therefore, on Amavasya, you should avoid purchasing the following items:

Avoid Buying a Broom

Many people in Hindu families believe that purchasing brooms on Amavasya (the day of the New Moon) can bring bad luck. Brooms are said to represent Goddess Lakshmi and the prosperity of one's home.

Within traditional beliefs, it is understood that buying a broom on Amavasya will disrupt one's finances, leading to unexpected expenses and health issues. As a result, many families do not buy a broom (or take one home) on this day.

Avoid Buying or Consuming Alcohol

The day of Amavasya is seen as an important day to be spiritually aware of how to cleanse oneself spiritually through prayer and meditation, and by practicing self-control. Most societies do not recommend either purchasing alcohol or consuming alcohol on this day, as both activities create the negative energies that disturb one's peace of mind.

According to the common religious traditions, family members should not be engaged in tamasic (influencing lethargy, laziness, and/or ignorance) as well as to keep themselves in a spiritually clean and pure state throughout the day. Sanatangyan recommends that the day should be spent doing only prayers, meditation, and sattvic (promoting a healthy body, mind, and spirit) activities.

Avoid Purchasing Puja Samagri Unnecessarily

While puja materials are in themselves considered sacred, many religious traditions and customs discourage purchasing puja items such as flowers, incense, clothes for deities, and decorative puja items on Amavasya.

It is believed that if someone buys puja items on the day of Amavasya, they will likely have an impact on the happiness of their families, and disrupt the spiritual balance of their lives. As a result, most devotees prefer to have their puja samagri prepared the night before the pujas begin.

Avoid Buying or Applying Oil

Oil, specifically mustard and sesame oil, has a very strong connection with Lord Shani (the Saviour of all people), however, many religious traditions advise against buying oil on Amavasya.

Many devotees believe using body oils creates heavy energy and therefore avoid doing so; other uses of oils (like in worship) also occur in temples of Shani Deva.

Avoid Non-Vegetarian Food

The sacred observance day of Jyeshtha Amavasya involves fasting, prayer, and cleansing one's spirit, and it is seen as bad karma to eat outside with meat (or buy it) during this observance.

Devotees are often encouraged by spiritual texts to eat foods that are sattvic and peaceful, which will yield good karma and divine blessing. Eating tamasic foods will draw negativity into their home and increase the chances of experiencing bad karma in their lives.

“अहिंसा परमो धर्मः”

Meaning: Non-violence is the highest form of righteousness.

Avoid Buying Wheat

In many traditional views, buying wheat during the time of Amavasya creates the possibility of negativity coming into the home. Because wheat signifies nourishing and abundance, purchasing it during Amavasya is believed to create an instability in the household.

Therefore, many of the devotees of Jyeshtha Amavasya 2026 will refrain from doing their major grocery shopping on that day, and instead devote their free time participating in charitable or spiritual activities.

Powerful Remedies To Remove Negative Energy

In addition to these examples of not making a purchase on this day, devotees also use Jyeshtha Amavasya 2026 as a day to conduct spiritual remedies.

Popular remedies include:

  • Lighting sesame oil lamps near Peepal trees

  • Feeding cows, crows, and dogs

  • Donating black sesame seeds and clothes

  • Chanting Shani mantras

  • Performing tarpan for ancestors

One powerful Shani mantra often recited is:

“ॐ शं शनैश्चराय नमः।”

Salutations to Lord Shani, the giver of justice and karma.

Remedies on this day, as stated on the Sanatanyan, are believed to lessen negativity and calm the planets that may have been affected during this time, and bring the blessings of the Divine.

To avoid negativity and gain the Divine blessings from purity, devotion, and careful actions through the sacred observance of Jyeshtha Amavasya 2026.
