Did Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu really grow a mango tree in moments? Discover the hidden miracle behind the ISKCON Mango Festival and its deep spiritual significance.
Every summer, as part of their Mango Festival, ISKCON temples offer mangoes to Lord Krishna. The Mango Festival is not just a time to enjoy mangoes (the king of fruits); it is also full of creative ways to display mangoes (through decorations and offerings) as well as to remember an amazing pastime of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. This is when Sri Chaitanya created a miraculous mango tree instantaneously, and through its presence, displayed the infinite power of Lord Krishna and His unlimited mercy.

What Is the ISKCON Mango Festival?
The ISKCON Mango Festival is one of the most colorful and joyful celebrations observed during the summer season. Inside the temple, hundreds of mangoes (real) and many other decorations (including artificial mango trees) help create a beautiful environment that invites everyone to appreciate the presence of the Divine. The Deities of Sri Sri Radha-Govinda, Sri Sri Gaura-Nitai, and other manifestations of the Lord are surrounded by beautiful varieties of mangoes.
As you walk into the temple courtyard, the pleasing aroma of mangoes welcomes you into this spiritual setting and reminds us of the bottom line of the teaching of bhakti; everything that we find enjoyable has to first be offered to Krishna.
This teaching is well expressed in the famous verse from the Bhagavad Gita, where Krishna states:
पत्रं पुष्पं फलं तोयं यो मे भक्त्या प्रयच्छति।
तदहं भक्त्युपहृतमश्नामि प्रयतात्मनः॥ (भगवद्गीता 9.26)
"If one offers Me with devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit, or water, I accept that loving offering."
"This Mango Festival is a powerful example of this principle and stands as a beloved celebration of the devotees worldwide."

The Hidden Pastime of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu
This great celebration is based on a wonderful pastime associated with Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.
One day, Sri Advaita Acharya was singing devotional songs glorifying Lord Chaitanya. The devotees were chanting and dancing with great enthusiasm. Hearing His own glorification, Mahaprabhu immediately came forward and said:
"Why glorify Me? Glorify Lord Krishna instead."
Advaita Acharya, however, had a different plan. He raised both hands toward the sky as though trying to block the sunlight from entering his courtyard.
Mahaprabhu asked with a smile, "What are you doing?"
Advaita Acharya replied, "Trying to stop the sunlight."
Mahaprabhu responded, "That is impossible. No one can hide the sun."
Advaita Acharya then spoke profound words:
"Just as the sun cannot be hidden, Your glories cannot be concealed. One day Your holy name will be sung throughout the entire world."
These words pleased Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu immensely.

The Miracle of the Mango Tree
Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu picked up an old discarded mango seed from the ground and, with love, planted it in the courtyard.
Everyone was amazed to witness that the seed sprouted right away and within just a few moments it grew into an enormous tree covered with ripe mangoes as it continued to grow until fully developed.
The devotees stood amazed at all the miracles surrounding them as they watched this seemingly impossible event unfold before their very eyes.
To add to the element of wonder, this one tree provided nearly 200 different kinds of mangoes at the same time. No one has ever experienced anything like this!
His Divine Majesty Sri Chaitanya offered approximately 200 mangoes to Lord Krishna, and after offering them to Him, He distributed them to all of the assembled devotees.
Each mango possessed a totally individual characteristic. No mango had a seed or a fibrous core; all the mangoes had nothing but sweet, juicy flesh.
It also teaches an essential principle of bhakti - that anything we enjoy should first be offered to Krishna.

The Spiritual Message Behind the Mango Festival
The Mango Festival is much more than a celebration of a seasonal fruit.
Examples of His Divine Greatness Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's countless miracles display His infinite mercy.
In our spiritual practices, our senses should not be used for selfish enjoyment, but rather in service to the Lord. When we offer mangoes (or any food) with love and devotion, they become prasadam, which means every person who receives the prasadam receives the spiritual power of devotion.
The scriptures declare:
यत्करोषि यदश्नासि यज्जुहोषि ददासि यत्।
यत्तपस्यसि कौन्तेय तत्कुरुष्व मदर्पणम्॥
"Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer or give away, do that as an offering unto Me." (Bhagavad Gita 9.27)
This is the essence of the Mango Festival celebrated throughout ISKCON.
