Want to perform Holika Dahan at the right time in 2026? Learn the perfect muhurat, Bhadra Kaal, and Vedic Shastra tips for blessings and positivity.
The festival of Holi is preceded by an important ceremony known as Holika Dahan. On this full moon day in Falgun, we remember how good triumphed over evil through the burning of Holika. The burning represents an effort to erase all negative influences, providing an opportunity for hope, peace, and prosperity to be restored to our world. This year (2026) Holika Dahan will occur on March 3rd, through which worshippers will be able to gain spiritual benefits by observing the specific auspicious dates and times as set forth in the Sanatangyan and Vedic scriptures.

Holika Dahan 2026 Date and Shubh Muhurat
According to the Hindu calendar:
Purnima Tithi Begins: 5:55 PM on March 2, 2026
Purnima Tithi Ends: 5:07 PM on March 3, 2026
The auspicious muhurat for Holika Dahan is:
🕯 6:22 PM to 8:50 PM on March 3, 2026
Bhadra Kaal Details
Bhadra Kaal: 1:25 AM to 2:35 AM
Bhadra Mukha: 2:35 AM to 4:30 AM
According to ancient Panchang references, Holika Dahan must take place within the Pradosh Kaal (the time after sunset when the Purnima Tithi is present), and only after the Bhadra is over.
In sanatangyan, Bhadra is considered inauspicious for शुभ कार्य (auspicious rituals). Especially Bhadra Mukha must be strictly avoided.
The shashtra clearly guide:
“भद्रायां शुभकार्याणि न कुर्वीत कदाचन।”
One should never perform auspicious activities during Bhadra.
The basic principle of this ceremony reflects the adherence to discipline in the practice of the spiritual science of Sanatan Dharma.

Holika Dahan Puja Vidhi
The ritual of Holika Dahan follows a precise sequence:
Begin with a morning bath to purify the body and mind.
Prepare idols of Holika and Prahlad using cow dung at the designated place of worship.
Offer raw thread, jaggery, turmeric, green gram, batasha, gulal, and coconut to the fire. Sweets and fruits can also be offered.
Worship Lord Narasimha alongside Holika for protection and blessings.
Circumambulate the Holika fire while praying for family happiness, prosperity, and the removal of negative energies.
This ceremony is based on the Vedic tradition and requires the direction of an authority of wisdom, such as a guru or sadhu, in order to perform the ceremony with a full sense of devotion and alignment with spiritual principles. The scriptures tell us that the timing, purity of mind, and intention of participants are essential to creating a moment of personal and universal cleansing.
"असुरशक्तिनाशाय हुताः होलिकाद्याः।"
The fires of Holika are lit to destroy demonic forces.

Significance of Holika Dahan
Holika Dahan, also known as Holika Deepak or Chhoti Holi, is more than just a ceremonial fire. Victory over arrogance and evil and the triumph of good over evil are celebrated at the festival. It promotes the concept of forgiveness, generosity, and unity. Preparing traditional dishes and celebrating with colors strengthens social and familial bonds. Devotees, guided by Sanatangyan, believe that performing this ritual during the correct muhurat removes obstacles from life and promotes well-being.
Due to the scriptures’ emphasis on timeliness of events/rituals, it is critical to ensure that you do not perform the event during periods classified as Bhadra according to Drik Panchang.
Bhadra Kaal: Avoid initiating rituals during this inauspicious period.
Bhadra Mukha: Do not perform Holika Dahan under any circumstances.
Pradosh Muhurat: Ideal period for performing Holika Dahan when Bhadra has ended.
यदा यदा हि धर्मस्य ग्लानिर्भवति भारत…” - (Bhagavad Gita 4.7)
“Whenever there is decline in righteousness, O Bharata, I manifest Myself.”

Therefore, if you perform the Holika Dahan in 2026 appropriately at the right muhurat, do not perform it at the time of Bhadra Kal, and follow the advice of Sanatangyan, then your spirit will be blessed, negativity will leave you, and the celebration of good over evil with devotion, purity and happiness will happen.
