The Ekadashi fast is a sacred observance based primarily in Sanatangyan that is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. In 2026, there are two very powerful Ekadashi vratas – Vijaya Ekadashi and Amalaki Ekadashi, giving an opportunity to devotee to purify his minds, strengthen their devotion to the Lord, and accumulate spiritual merit by observing fasting, praying and living in a disciplined manner.

Sacred Significance of Ekadashi in Sanatan Dharma

In Hinduism, Ekadashi has enormous spiritual value as it occurs two times in a lunar month, once during Shukla Paksha (the waxing moon) and once during Krishna Paksha (the waning moon), and is the tithi that is associated with Lord Vishnu who is the preserver of the universe. By worshipping the Lord on Ekadashi, one can erase their sins, fulfill righteous desires, and direct one’s self toward moksha. Goddess Lakshmi is also worshipped with Vishnu; she represents the result of abundance, harmony, and divine grace.

The ancient sages of India have stated that on Ekadashi, food, thoughts, and deeds must be pure. Many sadhus, who are guided by their guru, strictly fast on Ekadashi and consume only sattvic offerings and spend their time immersed in naam-smaran and japa (chanting). Ekadashi observance is a living expression of Sanatangyan passed down to us through the ages.

One of the great shlokas (verses) from the Padma Purana states the power of the power of each Ekadashi:

संर्वपापहरं व्रतमेकादशीति विश्रुतम्।

Ekadashi is renowned as the vow that destroys all sins.

The fervent devotion shown by worshippers is expressed in their chanting of the Vishnu Sahasranama (the 1000 Names of Lord Vishnu) and/or listening to Katha recitals. The teachings of saints and sadhus on this day highlight the victory achieved by having conquered one's desires and becoming disciplined within oneself through the observance of Vrat.
