Don’t Wear These 5 Colours on Karwa Chauth 2025 — As per Sanatan Beliefs

Don’t let the wrong colours affect your Karwa Chauth fast—find out which 5 shades to avoid as per Sanatan beliefs.

Karwa Chauth is a sacred fast observed by married Hindu women. It is a celebration of love, devotion, and the strong bond between husband and wife. Women fast from sunrise to moonrise, praying for their husband’s long life and happiness. According to Sanatangyan traditions and Vedic teachings, the colour of clothing worn during the fast is very important. Some colours, even if fashionable, can attract negative energy. These colours should be avoided during this holy ritual.

Before Breaking Their Fast

Before breaking their fast, women prepare for the evening puja—adorning themselves with solah shringar, decorating the karwa, and lighting the diya under the moon’s divine glow. However, according to Sanatangyan traditions and Drik Panchang, Karwa Chauth is observed on Krishna Paksha Chaturthi of the Kartik month (or Ashwin month as per Amanta calendar in Southern India). During this sacred period, the choice of colours plays a spiritual role. As per various Vedic sources and the wisdom of ancient gurus, wearing inauspicious colours can invite negative vibrations, disturbing marital peace and energy balance.

In the Garuda Purana, it is said:

"वर्णो हि देवतासंबंधी धर्मस्य च प्रतीकः।"

“Colour itself is symbolic of the divine and dharma.”

Therefore, the right shades can boost the sattvik energies, the wrong ones can deflate it. Here are five colours to not wear this Karwa Chauth 2025, to avoid. Sanatan shashtra and spiritual experts recommend this.

Colours to Avoid on Karwa Chauth 2025

1. Black — The Shade of Negativity

Black is universally associated with power and mystery, but in Sanatan Dharma, it symbolizes sorrow, inauspiciousness, and the absorption of negative vibrations. Sadhu and guru have long advised that black should never be worn during holy vrats or festivals. It is linked with Shani graha (Saturn), known for its karmic influence, which can disturb the spiritual serenity of the day.

“शुभं कुर्यात् न कालेन तामसं वस्त्रं धारयेत्।” - (Smriti Shastra)

“During sacred times, one should not adorn tamasic (dark or negative) garments.”

Wearing black on Karwa Chauth not only attracts emotional imbalance but also creates heaviness on your spirit, which goes against the joy and positivity this vrat is supposed to celebrate.

2. White — The Symbol of Mourning

While white often represents peace and serenity, in the context of Sanatangyan and Vedic rituals, it is also the colour worn during mourning. The shastras tell us to avoid white on Karwa Chauth because it represents to lack celebration. The day is supposed to be filled with celebration, course positive and life celebrating colours are to be worn. The day is filled with joy, dedication, and devotion.

As the Manusmriti mentions:

"श्रद्धया वर्तते धर्मः"

“Righteous acts must be performed with faith and joy.”

Wearing white on Karwa Chauth may dull the festive spirit that should otherwise be filled with warmth and divine energy.

3. Grey — The Shade of Uncertainty

Grey signifies doubt, confusion, and dullness. According to shashtra, wearing grey during a fast can cloud one’s mind and weaken emotional clarity. The colour’s neutral energy lacks the divine vitality needed to connect with Karwa Mata. In the path of Sanatangyan, clarity of intention (sankalp shuddhi) is vital, and thus, grey is best avoided.

4. Brown — The Colour of Inertia

Brown, though earthy, represents stagnation and lack of inspiration in the spiritual sense. Ancient guru granthas mention that during rituals that require devotion and elevation of consciousness, one must wear uplifting colours like red, maroon, or yellow. Brown, being inert, may dull one’s spiritual aura and reduce the sacred vibration of the fast.

5. Dark Shades of Blue — Saturn’s Influence

Blue, especially darker shades, is connected with Lord Shani and represents karmic reflection and discipline. While still holding the spiritual sentiment, sadhu and guru ask us to avoid it during happy vrats like Karwa Chauth because it reflects an attitude of resignation. The darker shades of blue are however, still to be avoided.

The Sanatangyan Perspective — Harmony Through Colour and Consciousness

In Sanatangyan philosophy, every colour represents a form of prakriti (nature) and affects the aura of the devotee. On a day as divine as Karwa Chauth, where every act is an offering of love, purity of thought, dress, and emotion matters deeply.

“सत्त्वं रजस्तम इति गुणाः प्रकृतिसम्भवाः।” - (Bhagavad Gita 14.5)

“Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas — these three qualities are born of nature.”

Encouraging the expression of sattvic shades, red, yellow, pink, or orange, are to be enjoyed. In this way, one can evoke a positive spiritual energy (sattva guna) and be rewarded with divine grace of devotion.

To summarize: Karwa Chauth 2025, avoid black, white, grey, brown, dark blue. To achieve devotion, joy, and positive energy, Sanatan belief encourages the use of vibrant, sattvic colours.
