What makes midnight so special on Bahulashthami? Know why devotees take a holy dip in Radha Kund to seek Radharani's blessings.

What does it mean when thousands of devotees gather at Radha Kund on Bahulashthami, and they wait until midnight in order to take a dip in the holy tank? The significance of this event is the appearance of Radha Kund, which is one of the holiest places in Vrindavan. As per the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, having a dip at Radha Kund on that day is considered highly auspicious and can help one earn the blessing of Srimati Radharani and Lord Krishna.

What Is Bahulashthami?

Bahulashthami is a celebration which takes place on Ashtami tithi or the eighth day during the waning (Krishna Paksha) of the moon in Kartik month. This celebration is celebrated because of the appearance of Shri Radha Kund.

Radha Kund is situated near Govardhan in the holy place called Braj, and it is close to Shyama Kund. Both kunds hold significance to the devotees due to their relation to the divine leelas of Radha and Krishna.

The occasion is also known as Radha Kund Appearance Day. Devotees from different parts of India and abroad visit this holy place to participate in prayers, offerings, kirtan and the midnight bathing ceremony.

Why Is Radha Kund So Special?

Radha Kund is not considered an ordinary pond. It holds a very special position in the devotional traditions of Vrindavan.

According to the descriptions of Krishna's pastimes, Radha Kund and Shyama Kund are connected with the divine pastime of Radha and Krishna following the killing of the demon Aristasura.

The sacred story describes how Krishna killed Aristasura, who had appeared in the form of a bull. When Krishna approached Radharani and the gopis, they playfully insisted that He should purify Himself because He had killed a bull.

Krishna then created Shyama Kund by striking the ground with His foot. In the meantime, Radharani and Her group of friends prepared Radha Kund using their bangles and digging instruments. This way, both kunds became inseparably related to the divine love of Radha and Krishna.

A shloka from the Padma Purana, which is often cited in Vaishnava texts, says that:

यथा राधा प्रिया विष्णोस्तस्याः कुण्डं प्रियं तथा ।

सर्वगोपीषु सैवैकाविष्णोरत्यन्तवल्लभा ॥

Just as Shri Radha is most dear to Lord Krishna, Her sacred kund is equally dear to Him. Among all the gopis, Radharani is the most beloved of the Lord.

This is why Radha Kund holds such a revered position among Krishna devotees.

Why Do Devotees Bathe in Radha Kund at Midnight?

The midnight bath is the most important part of Bahulashthami celebrations. According to devotional tradition, Radha Kund manifested at midnight on Kartik Krishna Ashtami. Therefore, devotees consider this particular hour especially sacred for taking a holy dip.

The belief is that bathing in Radha Kund on this occasion helps devotees receive the mercy of Srimati Radharani. It is through the blessings of Her grace that the devotees attain the blessings of Lord Krishna and love towards Him.

According to the traditional observance:

  • Devotees reach Radha Kund before midnight.

  • They offer prayers, prasadam, flower garlands and pumpkins (gourds) to the sacred kunda.

  • At midnight, they take a holy bath in Radha Kund.

  • Afterward, many devotees also bathe in Shyam Kund, which is situated nearby.

Thousands of pilgrims gather for this special occasion. Therefore, reaching the sacred place early is advisable. Devotees should also carry warm clothes because the water and weather can feel quite cold at night.

What Is the Spiritual Significance of Bathing in Radha Kund?

From the viewpoint of Gaudiya Vaishnavism, Radha Kund is one of the holiest places in Braj Bhoomi. Radha Kund holds great significance due to the divine love of Radha and Krishna.

The greatness of Radha Kund is explained in Sri Upadeshamrita, Verse 11, by Srila Rupa Goswami:

कृष्णस्योच्चैः प्रणयवसतिः प्रेयसीभ्योऽपि राधा

कुण्डं चास्या मुनिभिरभितस्तादृगेव व्यधायि।

Shrimati Radharani is the most beloved of all Krishna's devotees, and Her sacred pond, Radha Kund, is equally dear to Him. Even a single bath in its holy waters is described as capable of awakening pure love for Krishna.

The significance of this verse shows why Radha Kund is so respected in the Vaishnava community. It is not only the holy dip which the devotees take, but it is more of an expression of their faith, devotion, and the desire to get the mercy of Radharani.

The Connection Between Radha Kund, Shyama Kund and Govardhan

Both the Radha Kund and the Shyama Kund are located close to Govardhan Hill in the Braj region of Uttar Pradesh. They are both sacred lakes that are directly associated with the romantic relationship between Radha and Krishna.

This verse from the Nectar of Instruction verse 9 refers to the spiritual significance of the locations as mentioned in a Sanskrit verse:

वैकुण्ठाज्जनितो वरा मधुपुरी तत्रापि रासोत्सवाद्

वृन्दारण्यं उदारपाणि-रमणात् तत्रापि गोवर्धनः।

राधाकुण्डमिहापि गोकुलपतेः प्रेमामृताप्लावनात्

कुर्यादस्य विराजतो गिरितटे सेवां विवेकी न कः॥

Mathura is greater than Vaikuntha, Vrindavan is greater than Mathura, and Govardhan Hill is greater than Vrindavan. Above all, Radha Kund is supremely sacred because it is filled with the nectar of Lord Krishna's divine love.

This verse is about the spiritual importance of Radha Kund and explains why pilgrims consider visiting such sacred sites as a good opportunity to serve God.

Bahulashthami is a special celebration dedicated to the divine love between Radha and Krishna. The midnight bath in Radha Kund is one of the most popular practices among those who want the blessings of Radharani.
