Ashadh Maas 2026 Begins: Jagannath Rath Yatra, Devshayani Ekadashi & More

Which major Hindu festivals will be celebrated during Ashadh Maas 2026? Discover the significance of Rath Yatra, Devshayani Ekadashi, Gupta Navratri, and more.

Beginning on 30 June 2026, Ashadh Maas is a month filled with many Hindu festivals and fasting opportunities (e.g., Jagannath Rath Yatra, Devshayani Ekadashi, Chaturmas, Gupta Navratri, and Guru Purnima), as well as a time for continued growth, devotion, and worship of Lord Vishnu and all deities. There are many times (dates) that fall within this month that can be reviewed for their importance and respective meaning.

Ashadh Maas 2026: Why Is This Month So Important?

Overall, Ashadh Maas is generally observed from June to July and is associated with the beginning of the monsoon season throughout India. This month is extremely important to Hinduism (particularly Vaishnavism) and is one of great religious significance.

Ancient scriptures speak of Ashadh as one of the best times to worship, perform pilgrimages, give to those in need, and practice spirituality in general. Those who devote themselves wholeheartedly to God, during this month, will receive a blessing from God, and great spiritual merit.

A timeless piece of wisdom from the Bhagavad Gita instructs devotees on what the significance of devotion is:

पत्रं पुष्पं फलं तोयं यो मे भक्त्या प्रयच्छति।

तदहं भक्त्युपहृतमश्नामि प्रयतात्मनः॥ (भगवद्गीता 9.26)

Lord Krishna says that even a leaf, flower, fruit, or water offered with pure devotion is lovingly accepted by Him.

This sentiment reflects the essence of Ashadh Maas; the value of devotion is greater than any of the material things one may give as their devotion.

Jagannath Rath Yatra 2026: The Grand Festival of Devotion

An important festival celebrated in Ashadh Maas is Jagannath Rath Yatra, which is scheduled for 16 July, 2026.

The Jagannath Temple is where this huge festival will take place; it is the festival of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra, who will be paraded on ornately decorated chariots. There will be tremendous numbers of people participating in pulling the godly chariots along with many other activities, all believing that they will receive the blessing of the Lord and be spiritually liberated.

The Rath Yatra represents the journey of the Lord into the world of His own devotees and shows how God is reaching out with divine compassion to every part of the populace.

Devshayani Ekadashi 2026 and the Beginning of Chaturmas

One other major celebration of the month of Ashadh will be Devshayani Ekadashi, which will occur on July 25, 2026.

According to the Hindus, on this day, Lord Vishnu goes into cosmic sleep for four months until he is awakened on Prabodhini Ekadashi. During this time is referred to as Chaturmas.

Devshayani Ekadashi is also called:

  • Hari Shayani Ekadashi

  • Padma Ekadashi

  • Ashadi Ekadashi

Chaturmas is the start of a period when people will dedicate themselves to devotion, meditation, fasting and other acts of devotion.

One of the well-known Sanskrit verses explains the significance of following righteousness and being devoted to a higher power.

धर्मो रक्षति रक्षितः।

Those who protect and follow dharma are themselves protected by dharma.

The significance of this verse is that devotion and righteousness will be emphasized by those performing personal improvement and spiritual evolution during this time of year (Chaturmas).

Ashadh Gupta Navratri 2026

Ashadh Gupta Navratri, which will be celebrated on July 15, 2026 and during which Devi Durga will be worshiped in her various forms, is also a major religious observation in this month.

Gupta Navratri is not nearly as widely celebrated as the more popular Sharadiya Navratri, but it is a more spiritual time for people to meditate, chant mantras or perform other devotional practices. Many spiritual seekers perform additional prayers, sadhanas or other religious practices during the nine sacred days of Gupta Navratri.

The significance of this festival for those who are seeking to be blessed by God and to experience an internal transformation is paramount.

Guru Purnima 2026: Honouring the Spiritual Teacher

Guru Purnima will be celebrated on 29 July 2026.

This day is set apart in order to show appreciation for our gurus, teachers and spiritual mentors who lead the way to understanding of all types of knowledge.

Guru Purnima or Vyasa Purnima celebrates the birthday of Maharishi Veda Vyasa, who is considered a great saint and author of both the Vedas and the Mahabharata.

A revered Sanskrit verse often recited on Guru Purnima states:

गुरुर्ब्रह्मा गुरुर्विष्णुः गुरुर्देवो महेश्वरः।

गुरुः साक्षात् परं ब्रह्म तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः॥

The Guru is Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwara; the Guru is the Supreme Reality itself. Salutations to that revered Guru.
