At Sanatangyan, we honor this iconic leader not only for his legal and political genius, but also for his deep concern for the upliftment of the marginalized sections of society.

Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar: Early Life and Struggles

Dr. Ambedkar was born on April 14, 1891, in Mhow (now Dr. Ambedkar Nagar), Madhya Pradesh. He was the 14th child in a Dalit Mahar family. From a young age, he faced discrimination and exclusion because of his caste.

Despite many challenges, Dr. Ambedkar was determined to study. He graduated from Elphinstone College in Mumbai. He received scholarships to study abroad. He earned his M.A. and Ph.D. from Columbia University. He then studied at the London School of Economics. Later, he became a Bar-at-Law.

His struggle wasn’t just personal. It became the struggle of millions. He saw the need to fight casteism, untouchability, and social inequality.

Architect of the Indian Constitution

One of Dr. Ambedkar’s greatest achievements was his role as the chief architect of the Indian Constitution. As the Chairman of the Drafting Committee, he worked hard to create a democratic system that gave liberty, equality, and fraternity to all citizens.

His vision made sure that underprivileged people, women, and minorities would have fundamental rights, helping to build a fair and just society.

Social Reformer and Dalit Icon

Dr. Ambedkar had a clear mission—to end untouchability and create a caste-free India. He led many important movements, like the Mahad Satyagraha and the Kalaram Temple Entry Movement, which fought against the old beliefs of the time.

He famously said, “I was born a Hindu, but I will not die a Hindu. True to his word, on October 14, 1956, he converted to Buddhism along with thousands of his followers, making a historic change in Indian society.

Voice of the Voiceless

Babasaheb started many organizations and newspapers, like the Bahishkrit Hitakarini Sabha and Mooknayak, to give a voice to the marginalized people. In 1936, he also formed the Independent Labour Party to fight for labor rights and social justice in politics.

Achievements and Global Recognition

Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy has earned him national and international recognition. In 1952, Columbia University gave him an honorary LL.D. to honor his amazing work for democracy and human rights.

In 1990, he was given the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, after his death.

He also played a big role in the creation of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) by giving important economic advice to the Hilton Young Commission.
